Mirror cap removal 14+

I know there are some threads on this but has anyone ever found a good way to get these caps off WITHOUT breaking the tabs off? Nearly everything I've found says "but I broke a bunch of tabs off". The big problem I have is I bought a set of power folding mirrors that had chrome caps. I want to get the white ones off my originals and switch them, preserving all caps for 2 complete sets of mirrors but all the caps are current on so I can't even see what the clips look like to formulate a plan of attack.

I have pulled 2 sets and have yet to get a set off without breaking the tabs. Last time I did look the cap as I put it on, I think (I have not tested) that if you work your way across the top of the cap and lift up it will release the top clips, the allow you to rotate the cap backwards to get the rest of the tabs to release.

When I did mine, I didn't have issues with the caps. If I recall, the tabs were towards the top. I used the plastic bezel removal tools and gently worked my way around.

IF they're the same mirrors with just different caps why not switch out the entire mirrors. More work but seems a lot more safe so you can sell the extra set.

Pretty sure he bought the dl3 mirrors and he has the dl8. Wanting to put his old painted caps on new power folding ones.

cbrsilv15: That's exactly the case. Does anyone have a good, clear photo of the underside of one? Nearly all the photos I see are obviously of the outside of the cap.

Thanks HoosierZ, I've seen your video but it really doesn't get into the specifics of safely removing it or really no mention of if it's going to be destroyed in the process. If they were black work truck caps I wouldn't care and just tear them off but I really need to preserve both sets. Anyone have a good photo of the underside?

I typed in 2014 silverado mirror caps on eBay and there are a bunch of pics of the back sides if that helps. Pain to upload it to PB and then repost here.

Hmm.. I did find a pretty good set to look at, thanks. So do the tabs at the top have the metal sharkbite type clips on them that go into a slot? Then the bottom tabs just slip over a ledge. Looks like there are 3 on the bottom/outer edge, then 2 up top?

Well, I went ahead and took a stab at this. Doesn't seem to be much choice than just to hope for the best. I did manage to only break 1 tab on each cap, both the chrome and painted. I did break the big looping hooks in the center of the cap on the chrome ones (assuming they were on them like my painted had). Think the only thing I'd advise someone that might find this thread to do is to wait until a hot, sunny day and let it sit out for long while. It might make everything a little more pliable. It's cold where I'm at and cold in the garage. Putting heat on them with a gun might have helped.

The odd part was they go on with MUCH less drama than coming off. I'm still not convinced they're on there all the way. What sort of tape did you guys use? I still saved a clip on each one but might pull them back off and get some tape under there. It'd suck to have the cap blast off at 80mph

I found that using the Tapatalk app makes uploading photos easy. Hate having to use the computer to upload photos here.

Not sure why this seems so hard for some people but I followed the instructions and pulled the caps off without breaking any of the tabs, in fact I popped them back off and then back on no problems. And who gives a $hit if all the tabs are broken....just use double sided 3M and your good!
