14-17 FRONT door handle removal

Hey guys, I've read extensively on this and there's no definitive answer on how the front door handles are removed. I have a set of color matched handles I'm replacing my chrome ones with and the front end pieces are threaded, GM says "do not remove cylinder lock handle screw past hard stop" which I have no idea what that means.

 

Basically I'm wondering if I unscrew the front handles completely, because they are not a pressure screw like the rear, but many people I've heard say not to unscrew fronts all the way. Any help is appreciated

The door handles are super easy, I only needed the following tools.

 

Ratchet with appropriate torx bit

small angled pick

about 12" of thin twine

 

First, remove the black plug that covers the retention bolt. Then using the torx bit back the retention bolt out slowly, DO NOT REMOVE IT FULLY OTHERWISE YOU WILL DROP THE CAPTURED NUT INSIDE OF THE DOOR AND HAVE TO TAKE THE DOOR PANEL APART TO RETRIEVE IT. Just back it out a couple of turns, then try to remove the small side of the door handle, if it wont come out back the bolt out another turn until it does comes out.

 

Then once the small side of the handles is out just grab the main door handle and pull towards you but also work it towards the small side of the door handle. It will come out and you will hear a pop as the internal spring releases.

 

Now on the joint where there large door handle meets to the small side, look into the hole on the large handle side. You will see a shiny metal clip inside of the door, it has 3 fingers on it. Insert the new main door handle into the pivot side of the handle opening first, then you have to get the other side under the forked internal spring. This is where I use the pick and the string, loop the string around the middle fork and pull it towards you as you try and slide the side of the main door handle that butts up against the small side of the door handle under that metal forked spring.

 

It will take a couple of tries, once you do one side you will get the rest done in a couple of minutes. Now put the small side of the door handle back on and then tighten the torx bolt up and put the rubber cap back on.

 

It took me maybe 20 minutes on the first door handle, I can do them in about 5-10 minutes per side now.

Took me maybe 10 minutes to change them out with one tool and some string, very easy and well covered...

I dropped the screw not watching videos first how do I reinstall the backing screw???
