2004 4WD not working

So I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with a 6.0 Vortec. I have the manual transfer case (not push button) and now when I try to shift it into 4 high or low it just doesn't work. Wondering if someone could tell me what it could be or where to start. Thanks

You still have the electrical actuator in the front axle (located in the area of the diff'). They have been known to go bad.

Yes I second that, I have a 1995 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado and one winter my actuator went out. After I pulled the shift level back to 4Hi, the front axle never locked. It's an easy fix, just unplug connector to it and unscrew actuator out.

I would suggest before buying a new actuator that you just unscrew the original one, plug it in again, then, with the truck on, have someone shift between 2 and 4wd and see if the actuator is going in/out.

Also check the 4wd fuse in the cab fusebox.

If the shift arm on the floor cant make the trip, maybe rock the truck, or put in neutral and try

Either it's that actuator or your transfer died also very common.

Kind of off-topic but the actuator has been a issue in the past. The GMT400s had a "Rube Goldberg" wax & heater mechanism for the actuator that didn't work too well in the cold. I think the solenoid type was intro'd around '97 or '98.

Im not sure of you're mileage, but at 213k mi the pump rubbed through my transfer case and I had to completely overhaul it.
