Long Tube Header Install

For those that have installed long tubes, any tips? How long did it take you? I should be receiving mine sometime this week. Thanks in advance.

I did them in my car in February cold as ice in the garage

 

1. Take your time

2. Get all the tools you need and have them ready to go

- an O2 sensor socket helps

3. If you have a buddy wiling to help take advantage. When i did mine I have a few guys from our Camaro club come over. Night before got everything prepped and ready to go

Attack through wheel wells, get new gaskets, take your time. I can't remember how long it took my brother and I, but I think it was around 4 hours with taking our sweet time.

I bought new as they were like $12 each (AC Delco). My engine only had 4K miles after disassembling and looking st the baskets I could have most likely reused.

 

Mine took about 5 hrs total

Oh, you'll want some heavy duty zip ties to pull the o2 sensor wires.

Guessing you could cut it out, but I wanted it in one piece.

New GM gaskets are $5.00 ea. so that's a no brainer. I also bought studs and nuts for my install.

We used a lift on my truck. Removed transmission crossmember, you'll want a support for that. Unbolted everything. Stock manifolds came out from the top, and put long tubes back in the same way. I'd say the hardest part was the header bolts near the firewall. Be sure you have copper antiseize for the header bolts. I used new GM gaskets as well.

We also had to disconnect the steering linkage to make life a little easier. Just one bolt, no biggie.

Good call on the bolts, forgot about them. I used ARP bolts.

 

I also had some o2 extensions made, but never used them.
