Forgive me for my ignorance, not 100% knowledgeable about the diesels, but is auto 4X4 not available on the 6.6L? or is it an option?

I presume it has to do with the much higher torque and more severe duty these trucks have to go through; it also seems to be the reason why we don't have the buttery smooth A8 transmissions on HD trucks. They probably could not come up with a robust design to withstand abuse of severe duty / high torque expected daily from HD trucks. Judging from the gear whine I hear when 4x4s are engaged, it must also be using much bigger gears.

But boy, the stuff works well! We may not have the smoothness of the 1500 series stuff, but with what I put my 2500 thru, I am quite fine with the way things are. I really don't have an issue with not having a all the time 4WD feature. I haven't found something like that to be necessary. Maybe from all those years dealing with the old style get out of the cab and lock the hubs in kind of experience. When I need 4x4, I switch it on. When I don't, I switch it off.

I very much disliked the Auto 4wd on my Tahoe so I either was in 2hi or 4hi/lo.

I enjoy my auto feature, use it all the time during the winter, only exception is while towing. I think in town is where it works really well, when you go from dry pavement in a sunny spot to compacted snow in another in a matter of seconds, especially in hilly areas.

This is where I really felt that Auto was worthless because it took a wheel spin to engage and the constant spin/engage/disengage drove me crazy and really made me feel insecure.

For the average drive around town my auto is very quick, barely notice wheel spin before it engages but i guess i'm not racing around creating a bunch of wheel spin though, if i did that i would just keep it in 4 high i guess.

I never said I was racing around creating wheel spin. The vehicle was a 99 Tahoe and it required some wheel slip to engage the 4x4. That slip-grip was very annoying.

Maybe the newer system works better than the old one did.

I just missed that when I bought my 1st truck in '82 :D

No matter how good a feature is, there will always be someone out there posting bad things about it. I have had it on several vehicles and love it. Use it all the time when roads are in bad shape which it 95% of time here on the shore of Lake Superior where lake effect snow is a common occurrence and its snowing every day.
