Vibration issues

Recommended Posts

I bought a 2017 crew cab z71 back in November. It's been a great truck but in January I started experiencing vibration issues between 70-80 mph. I've taken the truck in twice and had two separate tires changed. Now the center console is rattling change at several different speeds. Also i noticed the dealer added 4 wheel weights scattered randomly around the back drove side tire. Just getting frustrated and looking for advice

Welcome to this forum! You will find several threads on this topic by using the search feature and looking for recent discussions on vibration. Personally, I would simply go back to your dealer's service department and tell them exactly what you said here. They are right to rule out wheel balancing as a first step (imo) but there are several other avenues like alignment, drive-shaft balancing, torque converter replacement, etc. etc. Don't accept a rattling new truck. They are not designed to vibrate and you have a warranty!

Thanks i read some of the other threads. The dealer told me it was normal for my truck but it's driving me insane. I took everything out of my Center console just so i don't have to listen to it. Just wanting to get some second opinions and find out what normal is for these trucks

It is definitely not normal....I had my 14 bought back for tge vibration & a knocking noise they could not fix....my 16 has been perfect since last year

Do you have GoodYear LS's?

I had an issue with my 14 Silverado Z71. Rebalanced tires, had front end inspected repeatedly with no cure. When I was doing a brake job, I found the wheel bearing destroyed. Replaced, and truck runs smooth as can be. Told dealership, and they acted like this was common. But refused to check the other bearings. I am almost sure, GM knows about the bearing failures, because they have revised themy several times in the last couple years. And several forums have information about this same issue.

Did you notice any noise with the wheel bearing?

No noise. After I pulled the caliper off, and spun the hub by hand, you could hear the bearing grind. It had a small amount of radial movement, but the caliper kept it straight. But allowed the wheel to wiggle enough to cause a vibration at high speeds.

Based on your video all I can see in is an armrest problem, the steering wheel is not vibrating. And the water bottle test in the armrest is useless, water will roil in mine even while my a$$ tells me the vehicle has a dead smooth ride. Mine armrest is fairly stiff and you can feel it resting against the rubber snubbers in the down position. Did they try tightening the console pivots or address the rubber snubbers within the armrest????

And the Goodyear Wranglers on the Z71 have a very aggressive thread, babied them for the first 50 miles so they didn't walk the rim and throw it out of balance. And once out of balance you need a good road force balance to deal with those heavy tires/rims and stick on weight placement on the inside of the rim is critical. Also check the entire outer tread on the tire...with the heavy nub pattern these tires are subject to chunks of rubber being ripped off by road hazards and the uneven outer surface can cause a vibration harmonic.

I noticed my front driveshaft is able to be shaken around in the transfer case, unlike every other truck on the lot. Dealer said this, and the concurrent vibrations, are within spec.

My 17 chevy which had 45 miles on it when I picked it up a few weeks ago would shake the crap out of you at 70mph, took it to the dealer today and they did the road force balance and several tires were out, I hit interstate and it's smooth as silk. Lets hope it stays that way.

    • Sounds like converting will be a bigger endeavor than I was thinking. This truck doesn't have 2Hi like the Suburban did. The Tahoe has 4Hi and 4Lo and a button to turn of traction control.   From what I understand the Stabilitrak uses open diff in the front and rear. When wheel speed is not the same the stabilitrak uses the ABS system to slowdown the spinning wheel(s) to transfer power to the slower non-spinning wheel(s). I thought the transfer case was open too. Being able to transfer power either more to front or rear depending on wheel spin. Maybe I miss understood some information with you saying and power transfer is 50-50. Thanks
    • My brother has a 2007 Avalanche with afm 5.3. It`s got 176,000 miles. Runs like a clock. Never been apart. Co worker has a 2010 Tahoe with afm 5.3. 230,000 miles. Never been apart. Runs like a clock. So, even though cyl deac is a weak spot, they can go the distance.   BUT, these engines had the oil changed regularly, AND had 5w30 as spec. I wonder if they would have lasted this far on 0w20? I`ll bet not.
    • I certainly could be wrong but I hear of pickups far newer than that 2007 cutoff which may not be going to the wrecker but are having engine work done and be that a reman engine or new engine or trying to repair the existing engine. Some of it would be design issues as per the cylinder deactivation system that GM has and one of those lifters wiping out the cam and the question of oil changes moving the needle or not on that whole mess, or in the case of Ford pickup engines that have the long timing chains and wearing them out and the roller followers and phasers and some of that certainly goes back to oil change intervals. But in those various cases the truck has all sorts of life left in it and so the unfortunate owner and may be original owner or used market owner that is pouring money into repairs so the truck is not seeing the salvage yard yet but damage is happening by infrequent oil changes. A friends son had bought a 2018 I think it is half ton GM and it had some sort of extended or used dealer warranty on it and of course the lifter issue bites and its rattling and so the dealer had to swallow the bill and was at least 7000.00 and I think they only replaced what they felt they had to replace so yeah, I can see that being a ticking time bomb in the not too distant future. Would frequent oil changes cure all these engineering "marvels", probably not but some engine designs have shown that they do much better if the oil is changed a lot more often then if the manufacturer service claims are followed. New trucks cost so much that there is an incentive to keep the existing truck on the road by repairing.
    • get a good code reader, and find out what problems the truck has noticed by reading codes. cheap ones can only get basic engine codes, you may want to get one that can get codes from all the computers in your truck.
    • This is sort of my point, salvage yards aren't overflowing with all these 'poorly' maintained trucks - excellent/good/servicable condition otherwise, salvaged only as a result of a bad engine from poor oil change regiment.    In my area, there are no 2007 to newer gm trucks/suvs in any salvage yards. A few are in the 'recyclers' with very obvious reasons for being there - wrecked.
