GM Extended Warranty

Are all dealers required to sell at the same price or can you shop around for the lowest price after the initial sell etc...?

The warranties typically cost more after you purchase the vehicle, especially as you put miles on it.

Actually, they don't.

Yes, the price is negotiable. Yes, you can shop around.

You can buy a warranty as long as your vehicle is still under factory bumper-to-bumper. (3/36)

I wait until I'm about to run out of warranty before buying one. It doesn't do much for you while you're under the factory warranty.

Pay cash and you can negotiate the price.

You can definitely shop around. I remember reading threads cross posted from the Vette forums that mentioned some dealer who was selling them cheaper than anyone around (remember, you can buy the warranty from any dealer). I bought mine around 35,860 after GM emailed me an offer of $83/month, $260 something upfront, with a zero dollar deductible. (Total cost was just under $1,800)- not bad for buying post-sale and at higher mileage in my opinion. Used it for the first time today and it covered my failed AC condenser and a faulty tailgate handle, no questions asked.

I bought mine when I signed the papers for the truck . He told me it would cost 1,700 for 3 / 36,000 mile warranty . I told him if he took it down to 1,400.00 he had a deal and he said ok . So yes it is negotiable . I keep getting cards in the mail from GM wanting me to get the extended warranty . ( Not sure why they don't know I already have it .) They want 99.00 down and 21 payments of 99.00 for the same warranty I have now . Which comes to well over 2,000.00 dollars . I have used it twice now and it has already paid for itself .

I negotiated the sell price on a 1 owner local trade. Prior to committing I asked what it would cost to run it through the CPO process. The reply was $499. I agreed to buy "if" they ran it through the process.

With this I get all the CPO benefits. Biggest being 1 extra year on the 100,000 mile powertrain and 12,000 bumper to bumper.

Not sure if this helps your case but it made me feel better about an already great truck. Also there was a promotion that ends today that was .9% financing for CPO vehicles which helped.

Had a dealer sell me GAP when I put down $20K...... Got that refunded when I realized it wasn't needed.

Extended warranties are along the same lines....... Not needed until after warranty expires - may never be needed.

I do usually get road hazard on tires - even that can be negotiated - Discount Tire will throw that or mount/balance in often if you balk on it.......

But nothing else do I get service plans on, appliances, autos, computers etc..........
