rear axle noise

Recommended Posts

I can't hear a problem, it sounds like normal driveline lash. Assuming of course that you're shifting from park to drive or reverse to drive. I haven't listened to my truck from that vantage point though. If it worries you and still under warranty get the dealer to check it out. If it isn't under warranty bring it by a local repair shop and ask if a tech can have a listen in the parking lot.

Doesn't the "clunk" sound seem excessive? I expect there to be lash, obviously, but the clunk doesn't make me happy.

I should note that I have a "howl" noise when I am coasting, it goes away when you give it some throttle. Only seems to happen when the diff is fully warmed up.

The clunk sound normal to me. A howling noise as long as it isn't too loud could be considered normal as well. There is a lot going on in the driveline. I would mention it when you take it in for the oil change. You may ask if a service manager or foreman to come for a ride. I had them do this for a torque converter problem in my 1500. The foreman wanted to drive and I insisted to be there to explain how to cause the condition. He drove, I explained what speed and load to be in the problem showed itself and the repair was done without multiple visits. You should try this to satisfy yourself if there is a problem or not.

Yeah I've got a few ideas. First, I'm going to take a better video with a light. Then, I'm going to do the same exercise with my 72 K10 and see how much movement and noise I get on the old one. Might even use some chalk to draw a reference line from the yoke to the axle housing to see how much movement I get in each case.

When my oil change comes due I will bring it up. I also want to make sure I can duplicate the noise, it appears to only occur when the driveline is fully warmed up.

I have 1300 miles on my 17' and also notice a noise when decelerating, somewhat of a gear whine. It is always present when decelerating but more noticeable at higher speeds. It seems loudest around 55 mph when off the gas. Have others noticed this? I see the OP has.

Did you ever come up with anything from the howl noise? I have a 2018 doing the same thing. Dealer has and is replacing the rear axles??

I think I was being oversensitive.  I have about 35k miles and havent thought about it in two years.  Not saying your situation is the same though!
