No more differential cover dropping

Recommended Posts

I changed the front/rear differential & transfer case fluids this weekend, I also changed out the stock rear end cover with a B&M. I know the recommended change interval for these fluids but I'm anal and will do it every 15 to 20,000 miles and didn't want to have to drop the cover every time I do it. And now I don't! :)

How many miles you at, and how'd the fluids look?

What is the benefit of the new cover, does it hold additional fluid?

0.5 quarts more capacity according to website.

Sorry for going off topic, lol, I tend to do that. Is another reason for a different diff cover, the ability to drain and fill with plug holes, rather than remove the cover each time?

Not to speak for OP but I imagine the drain and fill ability was a huge upgrade from stock with the amount of times he's changing his diff fluid.

I've never replaced mine but most manufacturers say they cool better. Honestly I think aftermarket ones look really good.

Look good, make changing fluid easier, have a larger fluid capacity to stay cooler for longer, and can accommodate aftermarket gear swap which can be larger.

Had installed a differential cover with the cap girdle on the '69 Chevelle when had it. I question how much the gridle really adds to cap support, I guess every little bit helps. Convenience of draining the gear oil just once is enough to justify one of those covers. I'm still back and forth on doing a gear swap (from 3.08 to a 3.73). Aftermarket cover (along with cap studs and solid spacer) woudl be part of the swap.

For trucks look at eh Mag Hytec line of alim finned covers drain plug and dipstick doubles the oil capaciity Ive had one on last 2 trucks if you do alot of towing it really helps keep the pinion bearing cool especially on the 8.5 rear I burned up pinion bearings twice on my 2004 before I went to larger capacity cover on my 2010 for over 110k lots of towing never and issue getting one for my 2017 with 9.75 rear
