Pros vs Cons - The Range AFM

There is a huge thread debating it that spans many pages.

But having read it all as far as I am aware there has not been a single instance that someone was actually denied warranty coverage due to a tune being detected if following procedure.

Feel free to send an email to bbp if you have any questions, very knowledgeable and helpful people.

Like I said though if not comfortable don't do it. :)

Warranty isn't black and white per se. If your ac compressor or steering rack fails you'll be fine. If you blow a rod or piston then GM will check your ecu history and more likely than not deny your claim.

GM can see if your ECM/TCM has been flashed...period. Any warranty claims on anything major like an internal engine or trans component has to be sent to GM to be OK'ed( read "denied ")

Yes there is the " Magnum Moss" or whatever it's called warranty act that is supposed to protect you but if you tune you will loose. Period. Your truck will be sitting forever while you try to state your case in court and in the long run you're still gonna loose. Just check out some of the Corvette forums where GM brought in their engineer that ripped the owner that flashed his ecm back to stock and GM told exactly what software was used, the date it was used and on and on and on.

Now I'm not saying that your two inch level will be blamed for your AFM lifters going out or complete engine meltdown. But if you have an electric power steering issue, your screwed. Now with full disclosure, I have a tune and other goodies. But that old saying " Gotta' pay to play" has never been more true. Flash back to stock all you want, GM can tell you exactly what you did when it comes to major warranty claims. Don't believe me, just ask for any tuner to put it in writing that if your warranty is denied that they will pick up the tab. Good luck with that, although I do believe that Edelbrock does offer something like that when it comes to their supercharger installs. Rare. No matter how close you are with your dealer/service dept they will tell you anything.

Update on Range AFM for 2017

The best I could do is about 3 days at a time and remove the Range before it would throw an error. I'm about to receive the newest round of BETA version in the next couple days. I'm told the Range engineers believe this will be "the one". I'll let ya know.

When I first got my truck I thought this might be one of my first mods but I didn' want to void the warranty so I waited and you now what...I no longer think I need one. I honestly can't tell when it goes into v4 mode and then back. And to top it off my lifetime "average" is almost 20 MPG. I'm glad I waited!

I use this little handy device with my Range AFM delete. Get in the truck, turn the switch to the ON position, and start the truck. Get where I'm going, shut off truck, turn the switch to the OFF position. Have never had a code or anything go wrong with my Range.

I run it behind the panel in front of my knees when sitting in the drivers seat, up over the steering column, and have the Range device sitting on the column. The switch is exactly on top of the column and the Range, while blocking part of the speedometer...............it's a part of the speedometer that I don't use!!!

I have something similar, well, I bought that and took the switch off and installed it into another ODB II splitter. I had to use a different splitter, since my Amp power steps don't work with that cable.

You have a 2017 as well then?

If you put your truck in M mode and "5th gear" (and I guess 7th? in the newer trucks?) it disables the AFM function 100%.

The majority of my drive to work is 35-50 mph for 9 miles. I've been driving my truck in 5th for almost 2 years. It keeps the afm off and I've only seen a +/-0.5 mpg drop in fuel mileage (5th gear is still an OD gear 0.85:1)

I do like the AFM (I've read about the lifter issues, etc) so I only run it when I'm driving where it can actually be used, like on the interstate or state highways. My truck only has 17K on it, but so far no oil issues, etc. I like that with the AFM I'm getting 22-23 mpg consistently on trips (I'm averaging 15.5 mpg on my work drive - which is 2.5 mpg better than my 00 Z71.)

Just a thought instead of everyone spending money on tunes, etc.

Still 6th. There are 8 speed options, but ours still have a 6 speed too.

I do that sometimes as well, but in our very not flat Pacific NW the AFM doesn't seem to help. I did 24mpg on a trip at 70mph avg in v8 only. I don't dare try that drive again with afm enabled, it has way too much elevation change.

I think the main reason for the codes being thrown is battery drain. Every system on this truck goes thru the 'puter/OBD/CANBUS.

My truck is a WT model with a few dealer added options when ordered. It has very litter fancy electrical doodads; but still has way more electrical doodads that my '04 Dodge/Cummins had decked out!!!! My truck has way less electrical shit flowing thru the lines than many of y'all's.

I'm thinking this could be the main reason for the codes being thrown.

Going thru the error I get "steering assist reduced" I did have the dealership check and clear the codes.

It was a half dozen different module communication dtc's that it threw. Hopefully this next version fixes the issue.
