Can I use phone data plan to mylink?

Hey Fellas,

Got my truck 2 weeks ago, it's in the paint shop for a few cosmetic blemishes and should have it this week. I know Onstar provides data LTE for the apps. Onstar won't work in my country. So I take it that some apps that require data connection won't work either? Apps like Pandora, Weather? There is no way to use your phone's data plan to get data to the system, correct?

Depends on your data plan or if you have a rooted phone and can enable hot-spot.

I had a rooted phone and enabled hot-spot to connect my truck to my phone to use data. But now I upgraded my data plan and it included 10GB of hot-spot a month.... your truck, at least on my 2017, will only connect to a secure wi-fi network(hot-spot).

I'm using an iphone 7+. Can I not use the personal hotspot? Which is also secured? Our data plan here is open with no restrictions to be honest. As for weather, well that sucks! Not a deal breaker but I hate having dead apps.

Are you sure about that? Not a user of XM radio, but isn't that what it just is, satellite radio?

I let my SirusXM expire, didn't even use it as I stream my own music through Google Play. I just went out to my truck and tried the Weather app, didn't work as I let my 3/month trial end for the Wi-Fi data. Still has Wi-Fi enable, and connected it to my phone via hotspot and the Weather app worked and was able to pull down todays weather, forecast, etc... and I can see my phone showing download/upload traffic as the Weather app was refreshing...

I have 3 apps I downloaded, as those were the only 3 available.. haha.. and they were able to update and get info after connecting to my hotspot. I even connected to my home network and it works just fine.

That's good to hear as well. I'm too excited for mine. Went to the shop today just to mess with it. Where would I go to select my hotspot in the trucks menu?

You will need to go to "Settings ---> Wi-Fi" from there you can manage your Wi-Fi connections and add your hotspot connection or home internet connection.

Really? That's weird, did it give you the same message when your data ran out? Maybe I'm missing something, but my SiriusXM trial ended on May 31st and my On-Star data ended on May 25th. Although, they extended my On-Star plan until August 25th, just no Wi-Fi data from On-Star.

I just made this video showing that once I enable my hotspot on my phone and connect my truck to my phone hotspot, it all works. Before that, it complains there needs to be an internet connection.

Thanks for the video, the weather app we are referring to is the one that came pre installed on the truck. Not the weather channel app. That's a great alternative though, I'll use that instead. Thanks bud!

Ok, gotcha. This whole time I kept thinking, my weather app works, why isn't theirs? Reason why in my last post I asked if I was missing something, whether it was about the XM or app.. just something..

You have a 2015? Did some searches and now I see the Weather app that you are talking about... that app is not part of the default app on my 2017, along with them taking away the ability to play video off the USB.. lol.. ..

My weather app is different on my 16. It just says weather, not the weather channel. I can fire up a video later
