Chrome 20" High Country wheels

Hi I'm a new member to this forum. I have a 2014 Silverado High Country that I purchased new off of a dealer lot in February of 2015. We have had 2 relatively mild winters here in Northelwest Indiana since then. Just yesterday I noticed the chrome surface of the wheels bubbling and peeling around the valve stem and a few other areas from the inside of each wheel. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so is GM standing behind them with warranty coverage? I still approx. 8 months or approximately 5,000 miles on my 3yr/36,000 mile coverage.

Thanks I took them in already and had the service department take a look. They said "it's not an uncommon problem" and ordered a replacement set of wheels under warranty.

Yep. Any of the "rust belt" states this is common, especially with the other crap they dump on the roads in the winter as well.

I had the same thing happen to my 2014 Sierra but since I drive so many miles it was over the 36,000 miles. The dealer offered factory assistance but I declined since the wheels were less than two years old and they wanted five hundred dollars. I will never buy chrome wheels again , period.

I'm in the North East part of the country and have the same problem. I try to wash the truck after every snowfall and polish the rims but still peeled and I'm out of warranty also. Dealer did not offer any assistance.

I picked up a new 2017 High Country last week with the 20" OEM chrome wheels and just noticed this thread. Living in Minnesota and planning on a few snowmobiling trips to WI and MI during the winter.

Is there any kind of special care during the winter months to try to avoid the chrome peeling that seems to be common with these wheels or just suck it up and wait for the peeling to eventually show up?

Sotabeller , I live in the Northeast and wash my truck wheels after every snow/ salt event , I keep them

Polished and waxed. The chrome starts to bubble up at spots.

Physc73, the dealer won't offer assistance, they get a greater profit margin and more labor allowance when you pay than they do with factory pay. They will not help if you are not the original owner. If you are the original owner demand to see the factory rep. That won't happen but dealers have self authorization for cases like this. They can submit a form To the district service rep and get an authorization almost instantaneously . They did that for me but since I rack up miles so fast I decided to let them go instead of spending the money to have it happen again and get rid of the truck. Good luck. I definitely would not buy these wheels again but they are very attractive. You can't tell the chrome is chipping off at 70mph. Just never stop!

I think help from the factory with this problem depends on the quality of the dealerships service staff. If they really want to turn you from just another customer into a repeat customer I think they're more apt to help right away. If they take your business and money for granted they'll fight you on it. I showed them mine and with no further discussion or arguing on my own behalf they pre ordered a replacement set to go on at my scheduled oil change next week. I was also told to look into a high end ceramic coating to put in the back of The new wheels if I want to possibly avoid further problems since I'll be out of warranty before the snow starts to fall. The service rep recommended the one sold by Adams Polishes. I looked into it online and it's pretty pricey at nearly $90. They claim the kit comes with enough to do 4 sets of wheels. I've never used a ceramic wheel coating before so can't say how well it'll work. I have used other products by Adams Polishes and found them to preform as well as they claim.

I have been using Adams paint coating on my wheels for years but It seems to last only 4 months. Now that they have ceramic out, I plan to to that route.  Lot more work to apply though.
