1500 with Max Trailing package

I would like to hear from the people that have the 2016 or 2017 1500 with the Max Traileting Pakage.

It states you can tow about 12000 lbs. I'd like to hear from people that are Towing about 11000 - 12000 lb with these trucks. How do you feel about it? Are you comfortable with it? Does it handle the weight well?

I would be Towing approximately 11000 lb only 4 or five times a year. It wouldn't be much at all.

I understand a 2500 would be a much better choice, but this is going to be my daily driver mostly City and highway driving most of the trucks life.

Most I've towed is 9000 and is no problem thru hills etc. Pulls like a champ. Lot of difference between 9 and 12 k. I also bought this as it is my dd also so did not want a gas guzzler 2500 Imo. Traded my 2015 Silverado 5.3 and mileage is the same and maybe slightly better in the 6.2. It also had the 3:42 butt gears. Good luck.

I have a 2015 Sierra with the max trailering option and 5.3l engine. I tow a 26 ft travel trailer that weighs around 7600lbs dry. I just got back from a trip from the Jersey shore into the Wilkes Barre, PA area and back. Some good grades, but I wouldn't say anything crazy. After the 400 or so mile round trip, the truck says it averaged 9.8 mpg. I think the truck tows pretty good. There were a couple of areas where I felt like more power would be better but never anywhere where I felt unsafe. It handles the weight okay. I think a 2500 would handle the weight better. I definitely know the trailer is behind me when I tow my trailer.

2027 6.2 10-12000 but open trailer with backhoe handles it fine but dint tow much over 55-60 as trailer not the best depends on what your towing and the terrain. To me brakes in mountains might be weak point so make sure trailer has good brakes and of course good wt dist hitch

i have 15 6.2 w/ max trailer package and i towed my buddies full size truck and trailer and 4wheeler was about 9500 lbs. felt great.. could def feel it but the 8 speed was great

I really like the new 1500 6.2. Trying to stay away from the 2500 with the 6.0. Just wanting to make sure I am making the right decision. I will make sure to have the weight distribution set up correctly.

Do I need something called helper springs? What are they and what is their purpose? Do they increase payload?

Do your homework and get a quality hitch with swsy control I luke the EQA Lixer brand

 

Helper springs maybe the MaxTow has 300lb higher rate than reg 1500. So depends on your hitch wt. but look into Summo springs ( they replace ypur factory snubber) rather than helper springs

'17 Max tow 6.2 here

We tow 9000lb TT NY to Fla in November and back in April. Truck is a joy to tow with.

Using a Blue Ox hitch, once i got the weight bars dialed in all is good.

Regularly tow 6000+ on car trailer, no bars and handles just fine

I have a 14 5.3 and haul cargo a lot. I used air lift air bags with auto level sensor. I have had max load once of 3k lbs in the bed. Leveled out, truck felt heavy but she was ok.

Came from a 2007 2500 Duramax..... 4 months ago to the day.

 

2017 Max Trailering 6.2L daily driver and tow less than 5,000 lb camp trailer loaded with 700 lb tongue weight scaled. Do notice more bounce over bridge abutments and whoop-dee-doos in the road way. Maybe an equalizer hitch would help with that - required for 7.000 lb trailer or 800 lb tongue weight. She does sit perfectly level with the 700 lb tongue weight.

 

Power is not a problem - revs higher and shifts more than the Duramax but that is to be expected - different beasts.

 

If I had to tow as close to the max rating as you are talking, I know the 2500 would handle it with more safety margin regardless of engine. I sold the Duramax to a 2500 6.0 owner who wanted more power to move his 10,000 lb boat & trailer.

This is great information. I'm coming from a 2004 Chevrolet 2500 Duramax. I don't tow as much as I used to. I wanted to update the truck. But did not want to go to a 2500 again.

My trailer is 25 ft long the max weight would possibly be 9000 - 9500 lb, but would not be telling that much throughout the year possibly 4 times a year. The 2017 1500 sounds like a good choice for me now. As this would be my daily driver.

Well the updates are really nice - so many pluses to a 2017 - I didn't even have a back-up camera in the Duramax. Talk about easy trailer hook-up now. I would have really missed the towing mirrors if I had not gotten the NHT. Rides much better than the 2500 - even with the 20's the NHT's come with. Really don't miss the Duramax, except in the torque department.

I just upgraded from a '15 NHT w/ 6.2L to a '17 duramax. Hauling 6k regularly with occasional 9k and rarely 12k.

 

I would not tow anything over 10k with the NHT over a few miles and feel comfortable. 9k was pushing it and as I drove a lot of hills (Ozark Mountain area in MO) and thus the duramax was traded for.

 

NHT is great truck but honestly I wouldn't step back to a half ton unless I wasnt towing much else besides 6k and under regardless of the specs.
