Oil Change tracking?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm supposed to be buying a '17 Silverado and it sounds like the last oil change may have taken a little longer to occur than the GM spec. Not only am I a little concerned about the well-being of that motor, but I'm also worried about the warranty. Does the ECM track anything to do with the OLM on the new trucks? I am religious about changing oil, but it's not in my possession, yet. Any thoughts?

All the truck will tell you is when you need to change it, it doesn't keep track of when the oil is changed. How long was it since the last change? When I had the '14 it was the only truck I had with an OLM. The other trucks I just kept track of the miles on a piece of paper of when I changed it. By the way, 3,000 miles is the old miles because the additives in oi these days are a lot better than 40 years ago. Conventional oil you can go 5,000 miles, synthetic blend (whish is what the K2 trucks are shipped with and changed with at the dealer) is 7,500 miles and then full synthetic you can go 10,000 miles. Mobil 1 has that new ultra synthetic or whatever it's called where you only have to change once a year so I assume that's for 12,000 miles.

The new M-1 once a year oil AND filters are 20,000 miles! I just bought a round of it for my 2015.

Luckily I don't drive nearly that in a year so I'll probably stick with regular full synthetic and probably still only have to change it once a year.

I don't know, that's part of the problem. Without going into details, I'm buying it from my dad when he gets it back from his old company. The new company had been using it as part of the transition for a couple of months, still making the payments. I hope it's not more than a couple thousand miles. I'd assume they used GM spec oil and filter, and the factory OLM of 7500 miles.

I plan on running Amsoil and 15k changes with their filter. I guess I'll just have to do a UOA for a few changes and see what they have to say...

This is a must to find out the condition of what you're driving. It will determine OC interval for your type of driving

OnStar runs a graph of your monthly Oil Life Monitor percentage. If you subscribe and ask for the monthly diagnostic emails, you can log into your account and it will show you when the OLM was reset each time, and how many miles the truck drove each month.

Exactly. It is a cool way of keeping track of oil changes and also to see if it was reset when it should not have been.
