checking codes with key cycle?

is there a way to check the codes with a key cycle sequence? or is a code reader the only way?

 

have a CEL that just came up on my 2014 Silverado and did the gas cap check with no luck...

A few options but the key is not one of them. Push the Onstar button, go to VatoZone or buy a $20 code reader yourself.

Make sure you check that $20 code reader...I have one and it won't read the codes from a newer GM.

maybe dumb question... but do i have to pay to push the OnStar button if I dont have service?

You have to pay (subscription) if you wish them to provide you any kind of service or information

I would drop by Napa or something similar. Almost all of them have a code reader you can walk into the parking lot with and see what’s up. No charge. Someone above mentioned this and it’d be my first stop if I didn’t own one.
