Condition Some customers may comment on a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on and/or an engine misfire/tick noise. Technicians may find DTC P0300 set or in history. Cause This may be the result of an active fuel management (AFM) lifter that is mechanically collapsed and/or stuck all of the time. This may be the result of internal locking pin damage in the lifter, due to oil aeration. This may be the result of a lifter that has collapsed and is stuck in the lifter bore. Correction Note: Inspect the camshaft for damage while the lifters are removed from the engine. If damage is found, replace the camshaft per SI. If SI diagnosis does not isolate the cause of this concern, technicians should inspect for valve operation. If the valve(s) are not moving, replace the valve lifter oil manifold and affected bank of AFM lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Replacement and Valve Lifter Replacement in SI. If the lifter has spun the bore, the guides should also be replaced. This confirms what I have been afraid of. The new generation of engines for the GM 'light duty' trucks have the same AFM problems that the GMT 900's did. I have asked the new owners on here from time to time, and most have said NOOOOO, the new engines are completely different with no AFM trouble. I'm calling BS on that!

There is still lots of warranty available and he can expect many more miles of trouble free, "normal" driving. It's a daily driver and not driven hard, not a track car. Regardless should not have to tear into a motor with 25000km.

It happens, have it repaired and move on...the only thing is that it sucks it happened to you. But that is why they offer a warranty. We had a Subaru lunch a turbo 2.5l at 10k miles, they repaired it and we traded that car with over 100k and zero issues many years later. There is always one that has a problem...Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

The most worn lifter was a solid one without the spring i'm assuming this was a non AFM one. Not familiar with internals of new engine. Also I'm sure metal went through the bottom end. i am a old hot rod guy.when cams/lifters went out on those old chevy big blocks/small blocks.most guys would do a complete tare down of the motor.reason being is that the metal shaving from the wore out parts.they get into the motor and destroy the bottom end over time.

My thought exactly. Oh well run it after repairs and don't plan to keep it off warranty.

2017SierraSLT Posted October 28, 2017 Posted October 28, 2017 Sounds like three issues. One is a soft cam, which is not as prevalent on the roller lifter engines as it was with the flat tappet. Two, a defective lifter, which was due to poor assembly, or lack of oiling, and third, poor lubrication, which could have contributed to the whole mess.
L86 All Terrain Posted October 30, 2017 Posted October 30, 2017 Oil aeration in these new DI engines is typically due to higher crankcase pressures. If this wasn't an issue on the LS family, I don't see how GM could go backwards with the new LT family, considering the LS was the first kick at the Cat and they nailed it. I am still trying to ponder how a bit of oil aeration would lead to a damaged AFM lifter locking pin, like above, perhaps there is an entirely separate oil system issue that doesn't provide enough oil to the lifters. Sorry for your loss, if they aren't even going to give you new heads or tear down the bottom end to look, let alone give you a complete new crate engine then I would trade that in faster than greased lightning.

Opened a case with gm to see if they could offer me anything. Extended warranty or good trade on a new one. Will keep everyone updated. They called today to say they are working on my case and no other details. Have had a lot of new gm vehicles currently a 14 and 16.
brendon444 Posted November 4, 2017 Author Posted November 4, 2017 Got the truck back today. Replaced all 16 lifters + cam and even the oil pump + other associated parts. Install looks clean, impressed with the dealership. Valve train sounds a lot quieter than before. Oil pressure looks good. Haven't put many km on yet. Still waiting to hear back from gm if they will offer me anything. Been polite through the whole process as I no things happen. But future reliability still a concern and if you don't ask you don't get.
brendon444 Posted November 6, 2017 Author Posted November 6, 2017 Gm called me today and asked if I wanted to trade it and would give me numbers. Not sure if this will work out to a good deal and better than what a dealer would offer? Anyone have experience with this?

I have experience with a major engine repair on a newer vehicle but not on a GM trade deal. I was extremely apprehensive about having major work done to my truck and my fears proved unfounded. I owned that truck for an additional 100 k trouble free kms before trading it on my current truck. If you want a new truck then this GM offer may be a great opportunity. You will end up with a newer truck at a good price but it will still cost you! My vote is for you to keep your current truck.

Yeah I may end up keeping it. But if I can get into a new one at a better than market price i might take it. I will see when they get back to me.
