Mysterious dash cut behind glovebox

I took my glove box out the other day to check the cabin air filter on my 2016 Sierra (that's a separate issue because I can't figure out why my truck literally smells like poop when the heat is on) and I noticed a strange cut on the left side next to the dash.  I snapped some pics of it.  Looks like someone took a Dremel and cut a notch out for some reason.  So I'm wondering if this is a factory cut and if anyone has this in their truck?  Can't think of why it would need to be there because there is nothing on the side of the glove box that would need to clear that.  I suppose the previous owner could have done that because he barely drove the truck.  So don't know what he would have needed to do that for.  Just curious.

Without looking at mine, I assume this is normal, although yours does look a bit jagged at first glance.

I watched some youtube vids of cabin filter replacements and it looks like they all had the notch.

I could be wrong though.

This type of discovery in a used vehicle can be quite disturbing!  It's too bad you can't contact the previous owner and ask.  It doesn't look like a factory cut.  My first thought is that it could be to run a concealed USB cable.  Or, does it help with the removal of the filter?

There is nothing there.  So who knows.

The filter is towards the right side and that small cut didn't appear to have any impact on servicing it.

I see that.  Only thing I can think of is that they got a shipment from the manufacturer and that notch wasn't there so the factory improvised since it's in a spot you don't see.  It doesn't both anything.  Just seemed weird the way it was cut and I couldn't think of any reason you would need that there.

Not now but there is a USB plug in your glove box which could have been used to power a device.
