4wd whine in turns

Recommended Posts

Hi,

2017 Silverado Lt, 5.3L. Used the 4wd H today in rather bad snowstorm to get to airport.  When I got into the parking garage at the airport, making slower turns looking for a parking spot, I heard a whining noise in the front end. That went away when straightened the wheels to go straight again. Whine came back when turned again.  Is that normal?  Maybe had a lot of snow/ice buildup? Less than 6k miles.

That’s the sound of four wheel drive working. The front wheels attempt to turn at the same speed. When turning one wheel needs to turn faster than the other, so the inside usually slips in these situations

I'm going with normal.  Where you in 4HI or AUTO?  AUTO will only send power to the front when needed and keep any unnecessary wheel hop/binding/groaning at bay, where in 4HI there is power to the front at all times and can cause hop/binding/groaning when turning tight.

Parking garage, as in a covered roof with a dry concrete floor and you're wondering why you get noise while turning in 4WD? Sometimes I just want to beat my head against the wall, sigh.

I just experienced this the other day and found out to be normal.

One question to add to this... Can the switch be changed between 2wd/auto/4H while the truck is moving or does it have to be done when at a stop?

Maybe you should then, have fun with that!

This may be his first truck and therefor first experience with true 4wd, no need to be a smart ass.

You can do it moving. Let off the throttle until the change is complete if moving from 2 to 4. Don’t try to engage 4wd above 45mph.

As soon as you get to non-slippery pavement like a parking garage you need to get it out of 4WD High. You can move it to Auto or 2WD. That "whine" you hear is undesireable wear and tear on your front diff and/or transfer case. I don't have the manual in front of me to check on what it takes to move from 4WD H to Auto, but I suspect you can do it at least 15 mph or less.

Well unless he's illiterate, there is such a thing as an owners manual, so my apologies to him, as far as you ozer. . . . .

With the old manual shift ones you had to be stopped or moving slowly. But these new electronic ones will shift on their own when it is able. You make it easier on the hardware by coasting, don't try to do it under load. But I believe if you turn the knob and the sensors don't like what you are doing, they just won't shift right away. I always shift while rolling forward.

Guess you missed where I said I had been driving in a snow storm, sorry I didn't switch my truck out of 4WD the instant I entered the parking garage. Since you actually took the time to read my post, thank you so much for your amazingly insightful and helpful response. Your help has been much appreciated. So just keep beating your head into the wall, it actually might help you.

Beating my head against the wall was an euphemism for the frustration I feel for millennials that can't take their eyes off their smart phone long enough to read their owners manual or watch wtf they're doing. Merry Christmas.

Easy now. Just because some of us were born in a certain year span doesn’t mean you can generalize us like that. I read my owners manual BEFORE I buried my eyes in my smartphone.
