If you buy a high end, aka..Denali, or High Country, you get an 8 speed with the standard 5.3 V8, correct?

Do the SLT's and LTZ's come with an 8 speed?

My 2017 5.3 midnight edition LT came with the 6 speed. I'm not in love with it, but it's just OK.

I haven't checked on the new styles like yours.  With all the people having troubles with those 8-speeds, count your blessings that you have the tried and true 6L80E!  I know I do.

Traction control is not responsible for your 'loud bang' when driving in the snow in 2wd. that's your G80 locking up. Traction control is computer controlled brake and throttle adjustments to help prevent loss of traction. The G80 is a mechanical device which locks up the rear axles when theres a difference in how fast the rear wheel are spinning. you had g80 kick in because traction control was off and you were in 2wd in conditions that clearly warranted traction control and/or 4wd or at least auto. read your manual, learn how the toy you spent so much on works, you'll be happier, safer, and your equipment will last longer.

I had traction control on and off and it sounded the same. I understand now what that noise is. Between the G80 and the way it works and this POS transmission I just hope this truck lives the 12 years I need it too. I have owned , F***, Dod** and toy***. NONE of them had a transmission that downshifted and make a random clunk. And a rear that sounded like this when it locked up. How can any of this be good for the drivetrain U joints ect... I can be a little upset if I want too. I guess it is what it is now and i'll live with it.

the g80 will lock up whenever your rear wheels are not spinning at the same speed, traction control will just make that less likely to happen. it's engages hard as a nice gentle rub to engage would generate a lot of heat, not give you the instant traction you need at that point, and really shorten the life of it.  Your truck has 4 main features for traction, your tires, 4wd, traction control,  and that g80. So if you're driving in 2wd and start to slip, traction control engages, shows a light on the dash, and the vehicle performs sounds differently,  if you still don;t have traction at the rear tires, the g80 will lock up to get both rear tires spinning. this is a good sign that you need less gas pedal, or to move to 4wd. if you're in 4wd, and you start to lose traction, traction control kicks in, if you're still not getting traction the g80 locks up, if you still don;t have traction, you need less gas pedal, if you're already hardly on the gas you need better tires tires or chains or to pull over and and wait out the ice storm you're in.

as for the clunk in the transmission, doesn't seem normal to me. I've only driven a 5.3 with the 8speed a few times and it didn;t do it. our 6.2 with the 8speed doesn;t do it. and our 5.3 with the 6 speed doesn't do it.  take it to the dealer until they fix it, if that dealer won;t work with you goto a different one and let the first one know you'll be not returning a "very satisfied" survey when it arrives.

you can totally be upset about whatever you want, but knowing what's going on gives you less things to be upset about.

It will be fine. Mine has done that from day one and many other peoples have done it also. People worry about how many years a vehicle will last, but it's actually mileage and not years that matters. Now I have owned dodges and Ford's and both have had clunks especially the 2010 ram clunk master. Until recently the dodge transmission was the worst out of any maker. The point is all of makers have some crap about the transmissions because they trying to please all emissions and mileage stuff and make what a truck should be also and it doesn't meld together in a good way. Just keep tranny and diff fluid changed and it will be fine. Like I said mileage matters and i have a 16 with 142k on it and it's still good and I towed a lot through out Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Just roll and treat the truck the way a truck should be treated and it will be fine. Just my 2 cent, opinion

I was gonna say the G80 locking diff engages harsh but that is normal and you'll be thankful when it gets you out of a ditch.

As for the tranny you really have to be relentless with your service department if your truck is not driving like other trucks with the same drivetrain. If you don't get satisfactory results then call GM customer care and go to another dealership.

The only other option is a tune... It won't fix the clunk but it improves tranny behavior/shifts... but I'm sure you aren't interested in putting your warranty in jeopardy.

I have noticed on here a lot of people having problems with the 8 speeds. I remember a comment someone left about looking at buying a 1500 with the 8 speed that GM had bought back from owner most likely due to the 8 speed. I have a 2018 1500 with 6 speed and it’s impressive by any means, plan to have a tune done to not only adjust shift points but also deactivate the cylinder deactivation

Not wanting to lose warranty didn't get the tune, did get the Range 4 cylinder  deactivation. It has helped a lot, wished I didn't get extended warranty now. Would love to get a Tune.

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
