Broken Windshield

Dump Truck got my windshield yesterday. It's a star the size of a half dollar. Should I replace or repair? I want it replaced and was wondering should I take it to the dealer's body shop for glass or get an independent shop do it. I would like to keep a "factory" glass and not a Chinese knockoff. Any one have advice and/or experience with this?

Thanks!

Definitely replace. I just got new windshiled for wife's GMC after something fell off an overpass and took a chunk out of the glass. We just raised deductible on comprehensive insurance so I wanted to pay out of pocket. I presume since you are asking that you are not going through your insurance either.

I called my dealer to ask what they recommend. Dealer said they use a local glass shop that comes to the dealership for window work. He told me to just call them. Turns out they were $100 less than safelite, and came to my house. I would use them again, they did a great job. So ask around your area and just find a good shop.

Replace it. Check with your insurance. I have a zero deductible and didn’t have to pay anything to have it replaced with an aftermarket one. You’ll have to pay the difference out of pocket if you request OEM glass.

Safe-lite replaced mine with their 'own' brand a few months ago. It's fine. I'm sure it won't be the last windshield I replace during the life of the truck. On new england highways in the winter, they get salt/sand blasted pitting the hell out of them after a couple of winters.

Caution.   Some of the national chains utilize cheaper material and/or manufacturing processes.   Go to an independent locally owned shop.

Ive seen really unacceptable distortion in the cheap glass where it has moderate curves/contouring.

Its crap.
