HELP!! Mid-install under rail bed light troubles!

Hey, All!

I'm a relatively new poster but long time lurker and harvester of massive amounts of information you all put out there. I have been studying several threads on these boards regarding under rail bed lighting for my 2017 Silverado, Z71, Double Cab, 5.3. I am absolutely NOT "electrically inclined". I chose to go with the semi-easy (or so I thought) aftermarket lights spliced into OEM harness to plug and play off the cargo light switch. I received the OEM harness ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-OEM-Pick-Up-Box-Wire-Harness-23327843/142846226214?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 ) and insured that the plug was the correct 6 hole plug. I pulled the dummy plug and plugged the harness in. It gave a positive click and felt I was good to go.  I went ahead and clipped off the OEM connectors and spliced on the ones that came with my kit ( https://www.amazon.com/Audew-Unloading-Waterproof-Plug-N-Play-Splitter/dp/B01MG7CO0S/ref=pd_nav_hcs_rp_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HJTVP5VRG3874QWST70M ).  Then I went to bench test my set up and ...  nothing. Overhead cargos came on but no LED's. I am now at the end of my electrical knowledge and hope beyond hope one ( or more) of you can help me figure this out. Thanks, SO MUCH, in advance for any help on this!!

Thanks for the replies! I can certainly try that but I did go red to red and black to black . Again, electric dumb....could that still be the issue?

OK, I'm on it. And unfortunately no, no tester.  Going to switch a side and see what happens. I'll report back ASAP. Thanks again for the replies.

Switched leads and still no light.

OK. I'm going to set to trying to find one. Thanks and I'll be back when I can get my hand on one.

Well, Color Me embarrassed! After switching the terminals, I went back in the house and set to trying to find a 12 volt tester. I sent out some text messages asking if some of my buddies had one. I ate dinner and watched a little bit of a baseball game. Then I stepped back into the garage and saw the harness plug laying on the ground below my truck! Apparently before I switched the terminals I had unplugged it. I plugged it back in hit the cargo light switch and ...you guessed it... switching the terminals was the ticket!! So great first impression I've made on these boards! [emoji15] Thank you very much for the help guys! I'll post pictures when the project is all done.

We all make mistakes! That's SUPPOSED to be the point of forums like this. I have done far dumber stuff! Now search for the "cargo on with reverse diode mod" on this forum. See if it's something you would benefit from. I love the ability to also control my cargos with my key fob!

At least you got it figured out.  Things like that happen to us all.  Good luck with any future mods.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

Hey Toby, looks like you and I have something in common (white 2017,  Z71 ).

xMEATxHAMMW|ERX, funny you should mention that, because that is THE mod I was interested in WAYYY back when I began wanting light under my tonneau. I ultimately settled for the cargo lamp only because of ease. That said, I'm a hunter and the MAIN reason I wanted light back there was so I could see loading up my gear after coming off stand after an evening hunt in the pitch black timber. To hit the fob and have light  come on as I approached the truck would be CLUTCH!  I'll do the search for sure, but can that  mod work being that I'm drawing power from the cargo lights and on the switch? Also...how difficult/expensive is it??

Mine is actually iridescent pearl tricoat, but when I made up my user name I thought 2017_ iridescentpearltricoatz71might be a little long lol
