Air conditioning not cold

ac never serviced before

 

 

My a/c is not cold.   I’ve heard a “thud” or “pop” coming from the blower door actuator area adjacent to the cabin filters.    I thought maybe my actuator is bad...but the heat will turn on and off when I manually change the temp.   

 

Symptoms:

-the pop/thud at actuator prior to ac going dead....now not hearing it

-air flow seems constant through vents when at highway speed even when blower motor is turned off...this has been a issue for a long time, even when ac worked

-I can hear compressor cycling on and off, belt seems engaged

-I’ve heard a faint whistling sound for a few weeks before ac died and now no whistling sound 

 

my thoughts are...pull the the actuator and see if it works.  If that works then I’m stumped.  Hooking up the pressure doohickeys to the ac lines looks complicated.  

 

any my other thoughts to troubleshoot this?

Lots of possibilities

Either pressure system or controls.

Pressure system: start car, turn on ac, Hood up and verify clutch engaged on compressor, check lines going into firewall. One should be cold and the other cool-cold. If true, then problem with blower or actuators.

If not, then low Freon, failed compressor, or failed switch that controls if compressor should come on.

Thanks.  I just browsed in my Haynes manual and it also suggested holding lines for temp difference.  This should help thanks

Needed a ac recharge that’s it.  Unfortunately a rubber checkball or whatever blew out the Schrader valve and is now lost.

My AC will start off fine and then quickly constrict and become low flow. Sometimes the air feels warm before returning cold. Got it checked out. It’s the temperature sensor in the HVAC box gone bad. So it doesn’t tell the system to stop once the air drops be below 37*. It then freezes over and the air can’t blow through. $650 repair because he has to dismantle the entire dash to get to the $25 sensor in the HVAC. My mechanic recommended running the ac on one notch below high or on high and the forced air won’t allow it to freeze. He said the moisture in the air under a low fan setting allows the line to freeze up. It works I just have to turn the system on and off once the cab is freezing. Any adjustment to the temperature, fan (lower settings) and the lines freeze. I’ll fix it later in the winter being this close to fall.
