Cooper Discoverer A/T3 4S size question

Looking for a little advice on the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S for my ‘18 All Terrain with 20” wheels. Stock size is 275/55/20 and Cooper has that size in the AT3 4S and it’s an XL load tire. Would there be any advantage to jumping up one size and getting the same tire but in a 275/60/20 size? That size is an SL load.

 

Wondering if there would be an advantage or disadvantage to the stock size in XL or one size up at SL. Both are P rated tires. Really don’t want to go bigger in the width either so I’m going to stay with 275. My truck is bone stock so no lift or level.

You’ll be getting a slight taller tire, a small amount of added sidewall girth for rim protection but more weight will definitely consume more mpg’s. I had 275/60/20 on my leveled truck but only to help get rid of the donut wheel look due to leveling. Personally, if not leveling or lifting I’d just get a better tire and stick to same 275/55/20 and avoid larger sizes especially due to their weight and rougher ride.

If Leveling your truck is on your mind, be prepared, it’ll create a whole bunch of issues for you too. Our upper control arms (UCA’s) are stamped steel now bringing our tires closer in if leveled and keeping same oem wheels, will cause bad rubbing unless you level and get new wheels with different offset.

I don't really have any big plans to lift or level so I went ahead and ordered the stock 275/55/r20 Coopers and will get them installed either this afternoon or tomorrow. If in the future I do left/level then I'll look at my tire options then. Thanks all for the advice and input!

Dumb question and I couldn't find anything using search for my particular question. I was running 35 PSI in my previous Goodyear SRA OEM tires because that's what the door sill plate suggests. Should I still be running 35 PSI with the new coopers even though they are still a passenger rated tire but are XL load, not SL? I know if you go up to a TL size tire from P size you should increase the pressure from what the door sill plate recommends but i stuck to a passenger rated tire. Its the XL vs SL load that has me a little confused. 

 

Any advice? Thank you!

Run the psi as indicated on your door sticker. Just because the tire may be rated higher psi doesn’t mean that’s where you run it at. Higher running psi is for heavy loads and towing. My Nitto Ridge Grapplers are rated at 80 psi, I run them at 35 and love them. If you’re still worried, go online to your tire manufacturer and lookup psi load ratings, from there you’ll see that absolutely no reason to run higher than 35 unless towing or loaded down.

Great, thanks! They run great at 35 psi, I just wasn’t sure due to the extra weight of the tire compared to the OEM’s if I needed to bump it up a couple psi or not.

I just got a new 2019 GMC Sierra Denali. I really want to change my wheels to 20s and was looking into this tire. You have had it for 3 months. Any thoughts? Are they louder than the factory? Ride better or same? This is going to be a commuter vehicle and not a off road vehicle, I just like the look! Thanks!

Awesome so far. Great in rain and the light snow we have had so far in western PA. Road noise is minimal. Seriously, I don’t notice any bit of extra noise compared to the stock tires but my son did just a little which is why I say it’s minimal. Really smooth on the highway too at any speed.

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
