285 or 275??

I went back and forth between the 275/70/18 and 285/65/18. I bit the bullet and went with the 285s. Both sizes were only available in Load Range E so weight and ride quality would be the same between them. From pictures I’ve seen of 275/70s on 9” wheels, the tire looks almost too narrow for the wheel. I like the sidewall to stick out a little to  protect the wheel.

thanks for the replies guys.

I am specifically looking at KO2s and Duratracs

i know it is splitting hairs. taller/wider

275 will have the exact same stance at the fender as I have now due to the fact the wheels I am going with have 1/4" less offset. 285's will be out a 1/4" more. 

275s are cheaper, slightly. duratracs come in a D load range, the other sizes are E.

speedo will read slow with the 275, I suspect the 285 will make it dead on (currently reads about 1mph fast at 60mph)

275s are stocked locally in both tires, 285s are a couple days out

i have the same level with their UCAs. My stocks were rubbing the UCA at full lock, both sides. I added/welded the steering stops from the BDS and Zone kits to the LCA steering stops and now have no rubbing with the factory set up. I imagine the 275 would not rub anywhere because it is only 1/2" bigger on each side, but slightly narrower

Yup - I’ve got a UCA rub on both sides as well that I only just noticed last week, as I was looking at something in the well.  Have had the setup since March and never noticed it.

285/70-17 32.8” BFG K02

 

no rub. Steel stock uca and lca. Bilstein 5100 3rd notch for 1.5 - 1.75” front lift. Rear stock block.

i am pretty sure I am going to go with the Duratrac in the 285. It seems to be nearly as tall as the BFG in the 275. Every tire shop in my area suggests it over the BFG for our weather. 

 

The next question is: go with a "D" or "E" load range? These are going on a 1/2 ton that came with stock 22s and 45 profile tires, so the ride with those sucked. the 18" wheel should make a much better ride.

wonder if I will notice any difference between a D or E tire?

I'd choose the 285/65/18 over the 275/70/8.  The differences  in price and appearance are not significant so my decision would be  based on function.  The 285 is within 1/2 inch diameter of your factory tire and will show no noticeable error on your odometer or perceived lag in performance.  Also, I don't give weight to the less rubber less cost statement when shopping for tires.  Often popularity of a size will have a greater impact on sale price.  However,  less rubber in comparable tires will mean less unsprung weight which in this situation translates to a few teaspoons of savings in fuel!

I'd go with the lighter tire.  The D load range is ample for a 1/2 ton.  What type of tires are you replacing?  You may find that the difference in tires may not give the dramatic difference in ride quality you are expecting from switching to a smaller rim.  What type of weather do you experience?  Forum members familiar with your region may have some other tire suggestions. For example,  I experience all types of weather here and Michelin all seasons have got me through the past 19 years.  Four wheel drive has been icing on the cake!

i got the tires yesterday. went with the Duratrac 285/65-18 E. I mounted them on 18x9 +18 offset wheels. The spec at 32.8"x11.2". IMO they look great. just the look I was after. The ride is so much better than the 22s. Feels like there is actually some cushion between the road and truck. Running 40 psi. Put about 150 miles on them yesterday. slightly louder than the factory tires, but still very quite. Had the truck up to 85mph on the highway, rode pretty smooth. 

my only gripe is they slightly rub the Readylift UCA at full lock. the wheel offset is less and I have an bigger steering stop welded on the LCA. I though for sure they would not rub the arm. :( my 285 stocks, after the steering stop addition were a good 1/4" from rubbing at lock

    • probably won't get a response from that user, as they haven't returned to the site since making that one post.  users don't (at least I don't, and I haven't seen any setting which would notify me via say, email) get any notification other than going to this site, and checking if they got a response on their thread...
    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.
