Zipper Sound from Steering Wheel

Recommended Posts

I have a 2015 Silverado that just started getting a zipper sound every time I turn the wheel.  It seems to be coming from near where the wheel meets the column and it is worse during low-speed turns.  Of course I am out of warranty!

I know some of the previous generation trucks had this happen.  Any ideas?

I feel like my 2015 truck does this as well, I’m at 44,000 miles and have a lift, not sure if this has anything to do with it but I noticed it probably around 3-5,000 miles ago. I hope someone else will chime in who might know what to do

I don’t know if I would call it a zipper noise but mine has a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel when going slow. From what I’ve read on here and what others have described in other threads I believe mine is the steering gear. Might want to read though some of the threads about that and see if yours is the same?

No clicking noise in my case. the steering just feels weird maybe close to full lock like a vibration

No clicking on mine -- just a "zip" sound.

And it's definitely near the top of the column, not down at the steering gear.  My truck is stock with no lift at all.

Do All of you posting here have some sort of Lift or Level?

Typically these popping, clicking noises are associated with leveling or lift kits.

To me that sound is normal. It's the steering wheel position sensor that you hear moving around when you turn the wheel. No need to be alarmed.

Isn't that an optical encoder?  If so it should not physically be touching when it turns.
