Installed the Westin HDX step bars on my 18 Silverado double cab today.. install was so quick and easy that my wife installed them :).. that is after I figured out how these go together. I will post my learnings here to help any other members who wish to install these bars.

I love the look of these bars, seem sturdy and well made.. but the instructions seem to be a product of Google translate so do yourself a favor start by throwing them out and follow the steps below instead.

Assembly

There are 3 mounting brackets on each side A,B,C.. C (longer one) goes on the rear door with the tab under the rocker seam, B (shorter one) goes on the front door with the tab over the rocker seam and A (welded one on the passenger side) goes in the middle. The long bolts go on the rocker mounting clips and the short bolts go on the step bar.

Attach all the brackets finger tight to the step bar

Installation

Place the supplied nut clips into the rockers at the corresponding locations. Lift the step bar up into position and bolt it up.

Looks good, love the new look with these on.

I hate when they give some of the worst set of instructions. Really appreciate your set of instructions, I’ll use them when I get mine.

I ordered mine Friday night from RealTruck. Since I’ve ordered a few things from there recently they gave me a few dollars off which is nice. I’m just waiting for a delivery date.

I will be adding LED bolt lights to each of the steps tomorrow for a little night lighting ..I tested different mounting locations in the dark tonight to layout where the lights work best.

installed the lighting for the steps ..drilled holes and mounted some flush mount 3.5w LED COB bolt lights that I picked up a on Amazon.ca. Added a little grease to the holes for rust prevention and bolted them on. I got rained out so I couldn't finish wiring them all but they will all connect via 2pin weatherproof connectors run thru split loom and splice into the reverse light wire on the trailer connector with a posi-tap

..since the reverse lights come on at night when you unlock the doors this makes the wiring clean and easy ..and you have the added bonus of increased visibility while you are reversing

Adding my pics too, love these steps. Thanks for the feedback and info on them Storm.

I am thinking of possibly removing the HDX off of these and maybe add the Sierra Z71 badge. Then I’d have to remove my Z71 stickers off of the rear.

Looks good! I got the same color. Been looking at different steps/boards. Thought for sure I’d want chrome. But thinking these might look better and last longer being powdercoated.

I was quite hesitant on adding a set of running boards, but needed them for my wife and son. My other kids are tall enough and so am I to not need them. These are really nice and add a bit of aggressiveness to the truck and a plus in a state where we get a ton of salt on the road, they are powder coated so I hope they can resist the rust.

Does your graphite have any chrome?

As you can see my rims and tires, I wanted all black tires and rims. Now they are starting to grow on me, though I might in the future get new black tires and rims after a lift/level.

Yes. I got chrome. Appreciate your take on this. I don’t need step bars, but the women in my life do. Put a pic of my truck below.

Nice truck! Yeah, it looks like you have quite a bit of chrome. We have a graphite owners thread, I can't recall if anyone posted pics with chrome side steps, but here is the link. It might help give you some ideas.

I really like these Westin HDX steps, they don't stick out like some other steps.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
