I've noticed that you don't even try to pack in that little bit of extra fuel.

No issues with mine.  I do however want a cap, I don't like the cap-less at all, I worry about dirt \ water getting in there.  I was spraying the truck off the other day and the water lifted the gas door open, that's all I need is a direct shot of water in there.   It's too easy for someone to mess with it also.

I bought a cover on eBay for 7 or 8 bucks. Think it’s just a glorified bearing buddy cover but whatever. They also sell locking ones at the auto parts store.

 

Supposedly there’s a drain in the spout that stops the water, but at least in the winter I like my little cover for some peace of mind.

That's perfect, thank you!  It does look like a bearing buddy cover exactly... but hey, if it works!

I actually found some good information on how the whole capless system works which makes me feel better.   I don't have the link still but it was right from GM.   Most systems have a spring loaded door with a rubber seal on it where the gas nozzle has to go through, so there is some force involved etc.  GM has 2 of these doors \ flaps not just one making sure dirt \ water doesn't get in there.   There is a gap between the outside and the actual flaps as well to allow dirt \ water to fall through  before it gets to those flaps and into the tank as well.  The system has been around for quite a while, I wasn't aware of any of this.   It's also nice because you don't have to worry about losing that cap or getting the dreaded engine code that shows when the cap isn't on!   I still kind of want something to cover it because i'm funny like that but it sounds like they really thought this through and you don't NEED one.  I would appreciate something that held the gas door closed instead of just a spring though, I want to keep the inside clean regardless.

I can't believe that a truck that can cost north of $80k CAD doesn't come with a locking gas cap.

I've had the same type of system since I purchased my 2014 Corvette, I was never really a fan of it but it's been flawless for almost 5 years now. The Corvette isn't out in the weather or slop that the truck is out in but I'd have to assume that they are pretty sure of themselves now that they are using it on the trucks.

The main reason I bought the cap is because after a winter car wash, I had some ice sitting on the first flapper. Undoubtably if me (or my old lady) just jammed a fuel nozzle into it, that ice would be pushed past both flappers and right into the tank.

 

A small amount of water may not hurt but really it’s no trouble for me to pull a rubber cap off. It’s not like I didn’t have to unscrew a gas cap on every other vehicle I’ve owned anyway.

I spend a lot of time down North Carolina's OBX. The wind blows the sand into every imaginable place when it's really ripping. I've seen a little pile of sand right on top of the trap door. I use the plastic 'bearing buddy 'cover shown by others when I'm down there.

This just happened to me. New 2019 w/ 3k miles on her.  First time it’s happened, and I’ve had a 15 and an 18.  My 15/18 had the annoying fuel neck issue where the auto pump would cut off constantly, but not this.  Going to call dealer tomorrow about the fuel filter hose.  Has the fix held up?

Stitch :  I took mine to my dealer and they could not find anything wrong with the filler neck.  Next time I fueled up problem was magically gone so I don’t know what fixed it or if  just checking unclogged something ?

That's odd...my filler port is on the right side and the rubber plug for the DEF is on the left.  And mine is also a 6.2L.

Hopefully it's fixed, but I've got about 6 tanks in mine and this is the first time it happened.  Thinking back on it, the truck was autostopped and I don't think I ever turned off the ignition because I'm not used to the auto stop and didn't hear the engine.

 

Only X factor I can think of vs. the other tanks that filled fine, was yours completely off when you filled up?

Brand new 2020 AT4 6.2L and I have tried filling up 3 times and it has happened all 3 times.  Only filled to 3/4.

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
