Upgrades for a smoother ride?

Hey all, 

 

Recently joined to Chevy club a couple of weeks ago so go easy on me! I come from Jeep and Toyota land. I'm looking into some potential upgrades to help make a smoother ride. I know I bought a truck haha but it's also my family's travel vehicle. We have an 11 month old that we try to let sleep when we travel at night so that's more what I'm thinking about, just to give you some context. I've tried to do as much research as I can before I started another post about it. Trying to figure out if it's worth changing wheel size or replacing stock shocks and springs with better aftermarket. Or if there are other options, I'm all ears.

 

I'll give you my stats -

-2015 Silverado High Country 5.3

-20 inch wheels

-Tires are BFG K02's

-Everything is stock

-Minimal towing

-Minimal off-road

-Don't want to lift it any

 

What are some good options for me? Also, I'm happy to answer any additional questions to help formulate the best suggestions. Thanks guys.

Hello and welcome and congratulations. Being that you’re stock, get rid of the KO2’s and put on some lighter P rated tires. You’re pretty much stuck with your 20’s unless you go 18’s as well. Truth is, stock suspension is the best riding as everyone compares their mods to stock. Go P rated tires and if your shocks are original then you’ll want to switch them out to Bilstein 4600’s. 5100’s are for leveled or lifted suspensions, leave it at that cause take it from someone with three growing kids, you’ll run out of space in your throw up buckets! Leave it stock

Those KO2 tires are probably a D load or E load tire.  That alone will stiffen the ride up.  You can try and play with tire pressures a bit, but a P load tire as TXGREEK suggested might be a good place to start.

Haha I was afraid someone was going to suggest replacing the K02's! I love how they look. I guess I need to think about how much I love them vs. getting a smoother ride. Good to know. Pretty sure I have original shocks so I'll definitely entertain the Bilstein's.  Thanks for your input!

This was mine stock with BFG KO2’s on it, instant harsher ride just by switching stock P rated tires to D or E rated.

This is now, many many thousands later, rides slightly harsher than stock but a ton better than leveled. Good luck, God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving [emoji884]

Roger that. Ok quick question. After some searching on the interwebs, I'm not able to find any P rated tires for that size (20 inch wheel). Is there another rating I should look at?

Been in your same shoes, years ago, bought my wife a Range Rover and had custom work done to it with added original KO’s. Even did it to a couple her Yukon’s (I’m addicted) AND It was a nightmare! Flew everywhere with the babies or else non stop throw up, yuck....it’s still embedded in my mind so many years later ha.

Roger that. Ok quick question. After some searching on the interwebs, I'm not able to find any P rated tires for that size (20 inch wheel). Is there another rating I should look at?

I’m all about quality, you can not get any better or safer when it comes to your families safety/future. Besides, you’ll get at least a couple years out of either one of them and then when your baby gets a bit older (unless you do what I did start a baby factory) you can start doing mods.

What tire pressure are you currently running?

And what’s your budget.

 

A Cadillac ride that’s much better than stock is possible, but it ain’t cheap.

 

For a reasonable budget, going to 17s or 18’s, with P-Rated all season tires, will net the best return for your money IMHO.

 

Also make sure your factory shocks are ok. I would guess that they’re getting tired.

275/55/20 is the stock tire size.  Lots of P load in that size.

Ditch the 20" wheels. Go for 17 or 18"  stock wheels and stock size tire that's rated the same as it left the factory. I've found the Goodyear SR-A's to ride the best and if you don't off-road then they're not as bad as you hear about. I wouldn't do Bilsteins as they will definitely firm up the ride and you're going to feel every seam and tiny imperfection in the road. Stick with the black factory shocks.

I’ll add to what some have already said but provide my experience. I have the Bilstein 5100’s at the stock setting with a Zone 2” Level Kit. The Bilsteins ride much better than the Rancho’s that came on my Z71. 

 

When I went from a P metric tire (P275/60R20) to a LT285/60R20, the ride is noticeably harsher.  Nitto Grappler G2 is also available in a P metric size for certain sizes.  

 

I’m debating about going with a CST lift and 35” tires, or taking out the Zone Level kit and raise the 5100 up to max lift and then going with Nitto Grappler G2 305/55R20 XLS which is a P rated tire. 

 

Rim diameter and tire weight play a significant factor in ride quality.

    • Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young pullets, and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. Fred was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the City Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize," but they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention. Vote carefully in the next election, you can't always hear the bells.
    • Can someone confirm if the GM order workbench terminal is able to validate a custom build sequence:   1) Initialize the Allocation Base: Open a new vehicle build queue, select the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD, and pick the High Country (3LZ Preferred Equipment Group).   2) Select the Diesel Powertrain: Go directly to the engine configuration screen and choose RPO code LZ0 (3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel). Ensure it maps to the MHS 10-speed automatic transmission.   3) Deploy the Seating Swap: Navigate to the Interior Options screen and enter RPO code ATT to replace the standard captain's chairs with the power-release 60/40 bench seat. Because you are not trying to force a separate luxury or air-suspension bundle, the standard, premium D07 Fixed Floor Console remains active. The system will accept this change immediately without triggering a warning message.   3)Apply Heavy-Duty Hauling Capability: Input RPO code NHT (Max Trailering Package). The commercial terminal will automatically bundle the required trailering hardware and software modules to support the diesel engine's maximum towing capacity.   5) Layer the Premium Tech and Glass: Separately add code C3U (Panoramic Power Sunroof) and code UKL (Super Cruise) to the order screen.   6) Run the Final Validation: Click the "Validate Order" button at the bottom of the interface.
    • Spent the last hour or 2 googling and reading up on the spacer thing. I don't like the loss of thread contact on the slip on spacers, but it appears you can get "extended" lug nuts that reach into the hole of the wheel to get back the lost threads. Looks like the only true hubcentric slip on spacers are at least .375". I'd want as little as I could get away with and don't want to cause other clearance issues going any thicker. Bora seems to offer what appears to be a well made .375" spacer and extended lug nuts. I searched here and did find a couple threads recommending Bora. But not cheap. By the time I buy spacers and lugs, new TPMS sensors, then pay a tire shop to install the new sensors, I suspect I'm going to be in over $400. Thinking about running out and getting some washers to put behind the wheel to see if .375" is enough to clear calipers, turn lock to lock without rubbing, and to see if the wheels/tires look strange pushed out a little. This would just be to check fitment.
    • Roadmaster makes some quality parts; I have their sway bar. I considered the RAS, but I ended up bagging. I didn't know what kind of ride I'd get with RAS, and the bags have interior jounce bumpers, so I can run 0 pounds pressure. I figured I'd have the best of normal suspension ride with assist on-demand. But it seems you got pretty much the same in one item.
