My lawyer just reached a settlement with GM over the intermittent black screen issue with my 2019 Silverado 1500 WT.  After multiple unsuccessful attempts by the dealer to repair it,  I contacted a California Lemon Law lawyer.   GM repurchased my truck for the full price that I originally paid for it plus penalties to settle the case.    Gonna buy a FORD.

What ended up happening after the lawyer got involved?

GM settled the case by repurchasing my truck for the full price paid plus penalties.

I have a 2019 Chevy TrailBoss and the same thing has been happening with mine too. We’ve called the dealership and they said it’s due to the heat or hot weather (we live in Arizona) but to turn it off for a few minutes and turn back on and it should work. Didn’t fix it. It turns on/off whenever it wants. It’s been happening ever since. It happened again today and it was 75° This morning when I turned on my truck. I read somewhere else that someone was told it was due to the “cold weather” in their area. Sounds like an excuse to me. It’s July of 2022 and still no fix for this. This is disappointing considering what we paid for this truck.

O.K. well I guess I am not alone on this subject. I have not seen any recent posts about this since 2019. It is now 2021 and I just experienced this issue on my 2019 Trail Boss. Not controls, blank screen and the radio could not be turned off or down, or change the channel. I turned the truck off then on again. Nothing... When I arrived at home, I checked fuses all good. I went to back it into the garage and it magically worked. No clue how or why. I did not reset, pull fuses or anything. It just decided to work again, which worries me more as this sounds like such an intermittent problem, like most electrical issues (goblins in the wires). Anyone have a fix or has GM announced a fix yet?

It is July of 2022 and my truck is still doing the same thing. It’s terrible. Haven’t heard of a fix as of yet

Happened to me on my trip last week, about 3 hours on the road and screen went blank and I couldn't do anything to reboot it.  Tried shutting the truck down and quickly restarting but that didn't work either.  Shut it down again and waited a few minutes (was going to disconnect the battery but found I didn't have the right wrench) so I started it again and it came back on.

It only happened the one time, hoping it doesn happen again and that it was just a fluke... but after reading this thread I'm skeptical!

My 2019 2500hd is garage kept and babied. Just rolled 30k kilometers and the radio just went dead and black as well. Just my luck, warranty expired in June. Has there been a resolve to this issue? If its programming would I really have to pay out of pocket for a fix?

Make sure you record everything that happens they always tell me they cant reproduce it , but i laugh at them and show the video clips.

I try to keep up with different threads on this issue, its hard now due to the list is so big. I have had this issue since 2020 when I got the truck and see its still going on with 2022 models. I'm getting the feeling that GM isn't looking into this. I would like to know why they are still selling the truck knowing its not working? The truck doesn't seem to have any other issues. My dealer just put in a new screen and then said just keep calling back to see if there is any updates. The GM person that reads these posts has been in touch with me but they aren't doing anything. They keep saying keep in touch with my dealer for updates. I would hope that someone would wake up and fix it. We keep having more people buying trucks with this issue, when are they going to take this serious.

When I do this, like today when I dropped my truck off for the belt squealing, they always tell me that the video is “nice” but it has to do it when it’s there for them to do anything at all…

Taking in my 2019 GMC Sierra Denali for the infotainment center going black.  It's been 2 1/2 weeks with nothing no radio, nav, phone or back up camera's on either the screen or the steering wheel.  Talked to service writers at 3 different dealerships to see if anyone knew about the black screen, nope never heard of it.  Called a fourth and bingo they have heard of it.  Per the service writer "just so you aware it will be over a $1,000 to fix it" doesn't know what the problem is but it will be over $1,000 to fix it.  Are you kidding me????

I read through the comments and tried the things that worked for others checked the fuses, held down the power for the radio and disconnected the battery which lead to other issues most resolved themselves but the lights on the radio controls stay on.  Came back outside and checked the lights stayed on 3 hours with the truck turned off so I pulled that fuse out.  Don't want have to buy another battery too.

The software updates seem to be a common issue updating the HMI firmware or the V155 update for the 2021 models.

Had my 2006 Chevy 2500hd Duramax for 16 years until it was stolen.  Didn't need the diesel anymore so I bought this truck seems to be a piece of crap having emission equipment issues and now the black screen.  Regrets.

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
