GPS 2019 update (Thumb Drive)

Recommended Posts

Afternoon,

I purchased a GPS upgrade from GM for my 2015 3500HD  They seemed to make a big deal about it was VIN# Specific...

Which make no sense to me as geez it is just a GPS map upgrade for God's sake.  Wondering thoughts on this.....  I am thinking it is to stop an owner from re-selling it after one uses it.  I would be interested in thoughts on this.  Actually was not going to sell it but Gift it to someone, or swap it for someones Chevy Gear.

Thanks

Yes, they use the VIN to lock it to one vehicle so it can't just be shared to others without payment. Basically, a form of DRM.

No,

I was really hoping it did!!!!

I have a 15 as I said and it does not have Android auto....   I am guessing the dealer will rock me. (Out of warranty)

On my 16 they did the upgrade free still under warranty (Android-Auto) But I am guessing they will charge for the software update.  Have not ask yet...

The Map update is just a map update as far as I could tell. The rest of the system updates over the air (wifi or OnStar), or via the dealer. Not sure of there is a cost here or not, or if my system (early 2018) has ever received a update (its set to auto-update).

In order to get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on 14, 15 and a small group of 16’s is new hardware.

Yeah I got a thumb drive out of nowhere in the mail. No idea if it is vin codes to truck or not. It worked.

I think they would work....   I think its just a false statement to stop one from trying.

Yes, I ordered the update for my 2016 after i tried to navigate to a location that wasnt in the database of my truck (business built in 2017).  I did have to provide my VIN.  The new database was about $100 and came on the USB thumb drive and installed perfectly.  Had to leave the truck running for 45 mins for the update to load which killed my MPG....  Instructions said to leave running, not with key just in ACC.  I have had systems like this fail if an upgrade was interrupted so I didnt want to do it on a drive.  Anyway, new business WAS on the upgrade.  I find it amusing that folks with $50K+ vehicles complain about $100 and also complain about Chinese stealing IP but are upset that the data is tied to your truck so you cant then stick it on eBay.  You have an option to use Google Maps with Car Play or Waze etc if you dont want to rely on the built in feature you paid extra for in the first place.  I am sure I’ll get flamed for this opinion.

Just to clarify some questions in this thread:

  • Official map updates are only available from NavTeq (now called "HERE"):  https://gmnavdisc.navigation.com/home/en_US/GMNA/USD  The copies on ebay and other places usually end up failing and could actually brick your HMI.
  • They are definitely tied to your VIN.  I have seen the updates fail if you try them in a different vehicle.  I know this first hand -- I own 3 different 2015 GM vehicles that all have the same part number for the update.  I figured it was worth a shot to try the thumb drive in all 3 vehicles but the other 2 VIN's failed.
  • There are no "software" or "function" changes in the updates.  It just updates the road maps and POI's.
  • Like "jhplak325" said above you cannot get AndroidAuto or CarPlay on a 2014/2015 with a software update.  It takes changing out the HMI and radio hardware (lots of threads on these forums about how to do that).

You quoted my statement But I did not/am not complaining about the price of this period.  All I questioned was if it was really Vin reliant. And I was going to gift it to someone if it was not. As far as leave it running no that is not needed as it can be installed when driving, it tells you that when you insert the thumb drive. Which I did because my drive to work is 1 hour and the update takes 50 minutes. so your ramble makes no sense.
