K&N air intake

Hopefully someone can help me out with some info I have 2019 Silverado 5.3 and the only cold air intake K&N makes is the 63-3109 air charger air intake  the closed box type . On all my previous silverados iv had the open air filter type like on my 2016 had the 63-3082 air charger air intake open air filter.  My questions are 1 I'm assuming the closed box type will be quiter then the open air filter type ? 2 is the closed box better as in it literally gets cold/clean air from wherever its routed to ? I was also curious about the K&N 20-3082 throttle control module anyone use it before and I'm assuming I'm better off getting a tune or diablo, blackbear, jet performance ect....

Closed box ones are usually quieter and better performers overall. I do not like the open ones that seal against the hood.

The K&N throttle control module is only listed to work with the 2019 LD models which are the old body style, and old engines.

There is no tuning at all available for the 2019s which is what concerns me about getting the K&N intake. Usually you’d want the intake and then a tune to match. There are some dyno tests of people LOSING power after installing CAIs without tunes on the previous generation. Eventually the truck will relearn to a point, but usually not enough to get the best results. I know the K&N has an impressive dyno chart on their website but count me as skeptical at this point. I’d like to see some independent tests and the AFR during the run.

Taking the lids off is no good.  That's for changing the filter element, not for regular use.  They won't seal against the hood like a kit designed to be open.  With the lid off those two you'll just be sucking hot air from the engine bay instead of "cold air" from outside.

Did you get the kn 63-3109 ? How do you like it ? Is it as loud as the open filter type? Hows the performance?

Yes that’s the one I got and no it’s not as loud honestly you will barely hear it but still has a nice growl to it. It for sure made my borla muffler louder when I get on it though. As for performance I do feel that it made a bit of a difference the truck feels stronger when I get on it. Of course it’s not a night and day difference tho but that’s expected from just an intake mod.

Here is the GM kit. You can also take the cover off for the open effect.

A small detail I noticed, the GM CAI kit 84561597, shows only for the L84 5.3 with DFM.

Not for the L82 5.3 with AFM and 6spd found in the WT, Custom and Custom Trail Boss.

Whether or not it will work on one of those three is TBD.

If so, it's a viable option for me to the K&N kit.

Thanks to Jay, for the info on that kit.

If you have the 6 speed tranny it won’t work. It comes with a dealer installed tune free for the new engine with the 8 speed tranny
