Very interesting  and useful thread here to learn that the 90-day commitment is at the dealer level, rather than at the buyer level.

I was told by every dealer that if I took the rebate I had to hold the GM loan for 90 days, and then I could refinance it with my credit union. In fact when I called my credit union, the gal at the CU even told me that if I was with GM she believed that I was required to wait 90 days. The CU also said that I had to keep the mileage under 5000 for 90 days to get the best new car rates. I considered turning down the rebate because of that, but didn't.

I finally signed papers for a 2019 using GM financing this weekend in NC. My paperwork specifically said I could pay it off at any time without penalty, so I asked the finance guy to to point me to where the 90 day commitment comes into play. He couldn't. Danced a little and said "that's a great question, no one has ever asked that, I'll have to look into that".  Nothing I signed had a 90-day clause in it. Great information here.

I refinanced mine after 2 months, didn’t have any issues at all.

Why wait two months?

When I bought my ‘18 the dealer told me the 6 month crap. I refinanced before my first payment and everything was fine. Then I was working a deal on a AT4 and the dealer looked up my past deal and saw that I had refinanced early and he told me he wasn’t going to do business with me. That night I called GM and told them the scenario. The next day GM called me and said the dealer will sell me the truck if I still want it. I told him nope. I’m going to buy from a different dealer if I end up buying now.

Was told the same 3 month story. Dealer didn't seam to care that I only financed $8K. Even if I kept it for 3 months it was worth it, but I will payoff as soon as I get the 1st payment. Ironically the finance guy said I could pay it off right away.

For credit purposes, I first financed with gm financial but also applied for the loan with my credit union. I have 60 days from the application date to refinance without re-pulling my credit. Im in the process of doing it now and I have yet to make my first payment with gm financial.

There is such a thing as dealers who will not allow a test drive until a credit ap is filled out. I know there are "good" dealers out there but there are clearly a lot of dirt balls as well. Researching dealers is just as important as researching vehicles. My advice to anyone is to spend the first couple days of a car-buying journey no more than a few inches away from your keyboard.

Good info, thanks to all for sharing! We're buying a 2018 Equinox Premier this week for my wife and I will be taking the GMF rebate and refinancing with a local credit union in pretty short order..  A side note, because it was a courtesy transporter We're buying a $39k MSRP Equinox for $25,600 with 4500 miles on the ODO.

My dealership made me sign a document that stated I wouldn't refinance until I've made 4 payments. It says if I do refinance I'll forfeit the 1500$ down payment assistance. Not sure if that means they'd come after me in Civil Court to get their 1500$.. ?

I did get a good price on the truck. 3rd one I've bought from this dealer so I'll probably just wait to refinance.

The down payment assistance didn't come from the dealer. Was it a GM document? Sounds like a steaming pile of turtle shit to me. Getting "a good price on the truck" is no reason to roll over.

You're right, maybe I'll just refinance it and see if they come knocking at my door for the money. I dug through the paperwork I received when I purchased the truck, apparently they didn't give me a copy of that document. I'm going to contact them tomorrow about it. Could it be a dealer scare tactic for them to prevent people from refinancing so they get their bonus from gm financial?

Call them out. Complete and utter nonsense.

No, dealerships get their money only at tome of purchase and have absolutely nothing to do with refinancing any vehicle, that’s solely up to you.

    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death.
    • In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them.
    • I knew a guy in the early 80's that bought a new Monte Carlo and ran it a 100,000 miles without ever changing the filter or the oil. Just kept adding. It looked like that inside.
    • Good evening. I was lucky enough to get passed down to me a 2007 GMC LBZ that was my great uncle's. While the underside and rockers are more or less gone I feel like with time I can restore it to working order since it only has 110,000 miles and he put nearly every option he could get without getting the new body style since he did not trust DEF. So far I have done everything I can think of but when I put the key into the ignition nothing happens. I put 2 brand new batteries in it. Cleaned the terminals. Check all the fuses and relays and they all pass with my multimeter. I know I'm missing something that I just cant think of. The only odd thing is the OBD2 port works which makes me think its not the mega fuse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
