Idle surging deemed normal by dealer

Hello.  New to forum.   I have some mods I will post on another day.

Anyways.   I have been having an intermittent problem with idle surging in park and stopped.

I have attached a quick video. The truck will do this 80% of the time.   At times when the idle drops there can be shuddering or the AC will blow warm.

Dealership gas has repeatedly said that this is normal operation in sierras.

Can anyone confirn?

Hunting for idle. You said in park and stopped, does stopped mean drive or reverse or what gear?

I would clean out the intake tube, maf, and tb. Then do a relearn on that. And see if it idles tight. If not next is (assuming engine temp is 180+) the o2 sensors are reading good. Hard to hit a target idle and afr when they read wrong.

Of course pulling all the codes is first but not e everyone has that ability.

Oh and not normal at all. But I would guess you knew that dealer what bs.

Park while idling, reverse while stopped, drive while stopped.

Truck is is under warranty.  No codes.

What are your mods? I heard open headers will do the same thing. Fuel Trim way off also causes it. Intake gasket leaks. Really worn out throttle body....

Insufficient data for a guess.

Don't look past a bad alternator.  Back in the day surging was happening to me and I rebuilt the alternator, surging gone.  Take it to a auto parts shop like Pep Boys and get an electrical diagnosis.

No performance mods.  When I said mods I meant with some other accessories.

Exhaust leaks might also do it (either broken bolts on the exhaust manifold, or the seal at the exhaust manifold to pipe flange (at least GMT800 trucks).  And by 'it' I mean throw off the fuel trim numbers, which may cause the idle to vary.  And it'll only throw a code if the ecm hits it's limits for either making the engine rich or lean (typically rich for this problem).

No exhaust leaks.

ac blows warm air, have you checked to see if it is low on freon. the engine will surge if the level is low.

It blows cold 99% of the time.   Only when the idle drops so low the engine shudders is when the ac will act up some.

I bought this 1500 Denali new in December.   I am a little over 30,000 miles so the factory warranty still applies.   If I work the next two months out of town as intended I’ll be out of the factory warranty range.

I will give the dealership where I bought the truck a call.    I have bought 2 new vehicles within a year from them, they might work with me if I explain the situation.

GM corporate is about useless.  It’s a long story, but I have tried going that route for something bigger earlier this year.

Not normal.  Get a new dealer.

Looks to me it needs an idle relearn.  Perhaps a sticky throttle body?

I finally reviewed the dash camera footage.  25 minutes of someone talking on the phone in the truck, then a technician leaning into the window looking at the needle saying “that’s not too bad”.

Yup, need another dealer.

    • Glad that worked, and in this case that is all on Autel for somehow dropping the ball for not updating the GMC section properly.    I believe in the basic section or unless it is in the advanced, when one does a check of lets say individual sensors for what the pressure is ( and it shows a temperature as well ) , I think it picks up on what the model number of the sensor is in a certain section where you choose "OE" sensor or at least mine is telling me what the model number is and matches to what they actually are and that is the number I quoted in a prior post.    I don't recall now if I had said prior that I discovered with my truck anyway that no matter how low I set the placard pressure for the rear tires, if the physical pressure is under 35 psi and I drive it for about 15 miles the pressure warning will come on for one or both rear tires. I am speculating that there is something else in the trucks system that over rides the placard pressure setting once it drops below that minimum pressure to run a metric LT tire at. The weird thing is it does not trigger right away after driving a shorter distance, it took that longer drive for it to trigger. Just something to keep in mind if you were experimenting with pressures below 35 pounds for a tire designed for lower pressures ( larger than stock floatation series tires ) and not being overloaded of course.
    • I've seen a scant few YT vids on them, but it's always in a performance application.
    • No clue. Service advisor said he'd call me this morning, which I'm 99% sure won't happen. They had the truck 5 days, and I didn't hear a peep. Finally had to call them yesterday. I guess they'd be content to just let the truck sit in perpetuity.
    • I had a little bit of time before I left for work this morning, so I plugged the scanner back in, and I selected Chevrolet Silverado instead of GMC Sierra, and the very first option was for a 2026 so I selected that one and I seen at the bottom it had the option for psi change unlike in the 2026 GMC Sierra, I selected that option and it took a little longer than the usual vehicle not supported, and sure enough I got into it, and it let my change the psi values.. I no longer have the low psi warning light!   Thank you for recommending me to try it under Chevrolet instead! I can confirm this device does work for a 2026 GMC Sierra 2500 hd 6.6 diesel  just have to select Chevrolet Silverado instead of GMC Sierra.   Maybe I'll contact Autel and let them know of that issue and maybe they will fix it for the GMC option  because some people probably return the scanner due to it not working under GMC Sierra.
