Dealer says shaking Yukon Denali is normal

Occasionally I tow a boat or small trailer with dirt bikes in the wife’s 2015 denali XL, and on slight up hills around 70 when it downshifts usually it will get to shaking, which goes away instantly if I floor it, or let off, I have replaced all 4 wheels and tires on the truck, had them road force balanced, balanced boat trailer tires, replaced boat trailer tires, just to cover my bases, even though it’s a slower shake than what I think an unbalanced tire feels like.  the Yukon is still under Powertrain warranty, at 60k miles, the 5 years are up soon though. I finally decided it’s not a wheel tire issue and took it in to the stealership to diagnose. They had me bring the boat since that is when she gets to shakin the most. They say they felt the shaking and said it’s normal. Boat weighs in at 4000 lbs FYI. This isn’t just engine vibes, it a real shake felt through the entire car almost like it’s trying to shift up or down really fast, or dare I say, a clutch is slipping. ATF was flushed about 5k miles ago, however this issue has been going on for the last 10k miles at least. I rarely drive it, so I never really knew what was up other than maybe the tires could be unbalanced. I argued with the service manager about why such an expensive (luxury)vehicle would shake when towing less than half its capacity, and asked him to show me a different Yukon that does the same and he said he tried, but was told he couldn’t. My bro pulled the boat behind his 2012 Tahoe and felt no shaking, nor do I when towing behind my 1997 or my 2017 power strokes. I am worried something bad will happen(outside of warranty) if I don’t get it figured out, however the dealership seems very unwilling to do anything for me, especially knowing it’s almost out of warranty.

Either trade it now or get an extended warranty immediately. Does this have the 8 speed M5U transmission in it? What your describing sounds like a transmission issue, or TCC shudder. They can road test it with GDS 2 installed and command TCC on 100% and off 100 % and if the shake goes away than you have a TCC problem. The converter never locks up 100% in normal use and is always slipping, piss poor design that will fail eventually. On 7/29/19 they issued a TSB for the 2019 trucks with 8 speed for TCC shudder. They can't get anything right. Get a 10 speed and your problems are solved.

I would try another dealer see what they come up with. As far as trade it in now. For me that would depend on how much you like it otherwise. The hit you take on trade in plus buying another depreciation asset would weigh heavy on my decision. After all the transmission cost is nothing compared to those cost.

We do like the car, and I don’t think the 2015’s had the 8 speed yet, but I’m sure either way it would be a spendy transmission to rebuild. I bought a 2015 cause they had 100k mike warranties, that I’ve never even used by the way, but I feel like they’re sending me on my way knowing that the car only has to make it a couple months and warranty is up, and if it is the tourque converter, it can take the rest of the tranny with it right? I guess another question would be, has GM recognized this problem and released any sort of bulletin or something saying it’s normal, or what can be done to fix it?

8 speeds came out  in 2014. Send me the last 8 of the vin and I will look it up for you if you like.

That would be cool, any chance you can see the build date as well? Actually I need the sale date to determine exactly when the warranty is up. Here is the last 8 of the vin

You have  the 6.2 engine with the 6 speed MYC transmission. The build date was 6/20/14.The delivery date was 8/29/14. Power train expires on 8/29/19. Make sure you get your complaint in writing with the date and mileage listed correctly on the repair order as you have been complaining about this issue before the warranty expired.Being that it is the 6 speed the most common failure I see with them is torque converter failing and taking the pump out from metal debris and also the 4-5-6 clutch plates burning up with heavy use.Good luck.

Thanks that’s good info to know. I appreciate your taking the time to look that up.

Does anyone think it would make a difference to try a different gmc dealership to see if they come up with something else? Would it be better to tell them I already took it to a different dealer and got turned away? I’ve never dealt with warranty issues, let alone hiring a shop to do the work for me, I went to automotive mechanic school and was a mechanic for a several years long ago, so I’ve always done the work myself, not that trannys scare me, but this is kind of an expensive vehicle that should be covered, a big factor in the purchase was the 100k mike Powertrain warranty, and now they aren’t honoring it.

Edit: maybe I’ll take it in to the 2nd dealer and not mention the warranty, to see what they come up with, hopefully without looking too much into if it’s still under warranty.

The first thing the dealer does is put in your VIN and run the history on the vehicle. You don't have to say a word and they know everything about that vehicle. Where it was bought and made and any open campaigns.Any warranty work done any where shows up as well.Try another dealer and see what happens, what have you got to lose? Sucks your regular dealer won't take the time to diagnose and fix it.

Every visit to the dealer gets entered into the system.  They know where, what and when the vehicle was in the service dept., not just warranty work.

You answered your warranty question with your title. They’re saying there’s nothing wrong with it. So taking it to another dealer would be my next option.

Be persistent and polite.  There is nothing wrong with getting a "second" opinion but I suspect the two dealerships will support each other.  Phone GM customer support and see if they can't further your case.  Over the years, I've made several warranty claims on various vehicles and it is not unusual for the first visit to get an "it's normal " diagnosis.  It's like visiting my Doctor.  He usually says, "give it two weeks" and if it still bothers you...

Get it in as soon as you can.

The torque converter just failed in our 16 LTZ Tahoe at 62000 miles, just out of warranty, but my wife did report the issue before it had expired, so on go the boxing gloves for a fight about who is at fault.

When she took it in for the vibration issue, they found the rear Magnaride shocks were bad, and replaced both for $1700.00, now the TCC is bad, thinking they never bothered to check the TCC like they were asked to do.

And to make this even more fun for "Hip National Bank", the steering rack has been deemed bad and needs to be replaced right away.

That sounds like the beginning of a nightmare, I’m sorry to hear that.

Does anyone know if any service bulletins or anything relating to this issue? Something that I could take to the dealer to point them in the right direction?

At this point don't even worry about the TSB's.

Request a ride along with a tech, they have the ability to shut down the torque converter while the truck is being driven.

Basically, if they shut it down and the vibration goes away, and then turn it back on and vibration returns they can pin it down to the TCC.

Make sure that what you are asking is being documented in your trucks file, and if you need too, call GM customer service and open a claim/complaint just so you have some recourse when your warranty expires.
