I'm not looking to get political here. Just seeing the recent posts about people keeping weapons in the cab got me wondering, what is the prevalent reason for doing so? I can think of 3 good ones. I got my CCW license in Wisconsin a couple years ago, and then got a S&W .40 for Christmas. But I have yet to carry it anywhere besides my own property. The recent news makes me think more about keeping it handy at all times.

I will not be put in a situation of not being able to defend myself or protect family.

TO YOUNG TO DIE (65) TO OLD TO TAKE AN ASS WHOOP-IN.

Brings this to mind.

A recent post on my fishing site.

The OP was asking about bear protection while hiking in the mountains of Colorado and carrying bear spray.

Reply's were varied of course.

" I have hiked, hunted in the mountains for years and have never encountered a bear".

" I have encountered bears and they were more afraid of me than me of them".

" When your bear spray is empty and the threat is still there, what next"?

One chance encounter with wild life or a shooter is my  reason for carrying.

:)

All of the above.  I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.  I carry all the time, rules and regulations or not, except for federal restrictions.  In that sense I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 for having a weapon when I shouldn't have a weapon.

I carry in public, both for the safety of myself and my family, and for other people that are innocent and don't deserve to have their lives threatened and put in danger if there is anything I can do about it.  I carry when I'm hunting, again for my own personal safety.  I have been around a lot of bears and angry coyotes.  And then there is the last one, the mass shootings, no thanks to some of the recent events.  What if there are no police officers nearby?  What if nobody else has a CCW on them and is willing to intervene?  The last one was over in 30 seconds because there was a cop nearby that reacted swiftly and efficiently.  I would not want to be caught unarmed in a situation like that if there is any chance that I could save the lives of 20+ some people, including myself and my family.

That’s why the shooter in El Paso drove 10 hours to a Walmart where most people shopping there were illegals and wouldn’t be carrying a gun. If he would have went down the street to the Walmart local to him there would have been quite a few Texans there with there CCW on them. If everyone carried guns, these shootings wouldn’t happen as much. Guns saves lives.

These topics are always pretty funny, most of the people carrying have no business using it in a public situation. They all say the same thing, judged by 12 rather than carried by 6 or self defense of my family yada yada. Pulling a gun on another gun carrying thief, very smart to escalate the situation! So you tell me if you are getting robbed at gun point with your wife and kids behind you that you are going to pull a gun out and risk a shootout with them behind out? They have a better chance of hitting someone else such as an innocent bystander than the perp in an actual situation, especially in a mass shooting space. Even worse they have a better chance of having an accidental shooting with in the family at home. A few trips a year to gun range shooting a stationary target and all of a sudden you are qualified to return fire while moving and being shot at? Yeah sure... I am all for guns as a fellow owner, hunter and enthusiast, but the best reaction as any properly trained gun owner will tell you is to run in a serpentine fashion, take cover, asses and then maybe if the situation is clear approach the target. Adrenalin high, shots being fired you aren't a good judge to determine location of and identifying the suspect to immediately return fire. Many CCW's have aspirations of hearing gun fire and dropping the suspect and saving the lives of many in one quick shot, that is dangerous thinking and exactly what is in the head of those that carry and spout the same rebel phrases. When was the last time a civilian carrying ended a mass shooting? It is almost always a police officer or the shooter themselves. This is especially true as more and more shooters are wearing some type of body armor, I will wait while the barely trained CCW carrying an M&P tries to put one in the perp center mass where trained to shoot before becoming a statistic... For every situation where a civilian carrying ended a attack (which are few and far between) there are many more where it ended the other way. I personally have never met someone who knew someone who met someone else that has ever had a gun pulled on them or been in a shooting situation. Having a cousin who trains people to carry, shoots and trains often in competitions and at academies he has pointed out some significant sights and views that regular carriers either do not know, do wrong or do not think about. I keep my guns at home and use them for recreation, which is what most people actually buy them for. The whole protection thing is just BS and a cover, you like them, they are fun to shoot and you like fresh game meat, that is pretty much it.

#1 Reason to CCW is that it’s in our constitution and freedom to do so, the right to bear arms shall not be infringed upon. I carry for protection for myself, my family and my neighbor beside me. Additional reasons, America was formed to be a country splitting away from tyrannical government rule meaning “We The People” decide our future and not the government. As stated by our forming fathers, the time that government attempts to take our weapons away will be the end of America, George Washington. #1 reason America has never been invaded? We The People are Armed! No way will police be able to get anywhere in time to protect you and your family. I’ve had multiple encounters all ended positive for me because I was armed. Don’t forget why America is the most free country on the planet, “We The People” Control our destiny. Socialist countries feed off of the people in order to survive. It would be completely different if the people were armed. Currently, government fears We The People and should never be the other way around.

You're entitled to your opinion.

I agree with a lot you said.

I will carry at least for the ability to not be left helpless.

There is an old joke about wearing bells and carrying pepper spray to be safe in bear country.  Because we all know that grizzly bear poop has bells in it and smells like pepper spray!

Another old quote, "Why did you shoot the bad guy 16 times?"  "Because my magazine didn't hold 17!"

I own a few businesses, growing up my father was robbed multiple times, last time he was beaten and left bleeding. I purchased a Glock 22 40 cal with 15 round magazines and practiced often, always chambered. One day while at my fathers shop a couple very shady guys came in both headed towards the expensive items in the back of the shop, I took my blazer off as I wear my shoulder holster and both obviously looked concerned as they very quickly exited the store. I didn’t purposely intimidate them as I was on the other side of my fathers shop. As they literally ran off my father immediately saw both had very large knives stuffed in the back of their pants. Many more instances occurred and each and every one of those instances were deterred just by walking around in the shop with my weapon. At least Two deterred car jacking and I will never not carry, I go everywhere with a weapon. I can say 100% if it wasn’t for being able to carry I and my family members and a few others wouldn’t be here. I own many high end pistols and rifles. I love to go shoot competitively with my friends and have multiple AR15’s which are a blast to shoot but now I’ve started Hog hunting and no way would you be able to hit additional hogs running after taking down the first hog hog without a semi auto large capacity magazines. Btw, one of my best friends works for ATF and said bad guys can easily acquire weapons so putting restrictions on lawful citizens is just another way a government becomes more tyrannical then socialism sets in and all your freedom is gone!

Last thing I’ll say is that bad things always happen in gun free zones cause the bad guys love taking from places knowing the good guys obey the law. I turn and walk away never supporting businesses that do not allow permit carrying customers especially when they have no armed guard. What’s your life and your loved ones worth?

This is a good point. Schools are a prime target.

You are 100% right. But it seems that most of these terrorists are not trained either. Unless you call playing Call of Duty gun training. So it's not like you need to be an army ranger. Simply returning fire would cause most of the idiots to alter their plans.
