I appreciate the logic expressed by many to carry even if I don't agree. I find it very sad that there are those who feel the need.  I live in an environment where most do not ccw and I feel safe and "free".  I also understand the horrendous mass shooting events have a profound impact on what makes a person feel safe.  My thoughts are with all of you as you (we) find ways to deal with these tragedies.

I’d be fine with hanging up my CCW as soon as it is safe to do so and based on the route the country and world is heading it’ll never be safe!

Mexico has terrorists trying to cross into America, Americans have been disliked for over 20 years and yet everyone want to come into America, must be doing something right lol

It’s cause we have freedom and liberty that’s been stripped from all nations by the socialist government

That's kind of why I asked the question. I feel safe at home and work. But there are places I've traveled where that was not the case. These large scale tragedies don't seem to happen in inner city Chicago or Baltimore though. They happen at schools, festivals, stores in the suburbs. Places where I bet the day before, most people would also have agreed they felt safe.

I was wondering if people felt like they needed protection all the time, or if is more for the "just in case". It seems that there are some of both.

These topics are always pretty funny, most of the people carrying have no business using it in a public situation. They all say the same thing, judged by 12 rather than carried by 6 or self defense of my family yada yada. Pulling a gun on another gun carrying thief, very smart to escalate the situation! So you tell me if you are getting robbed at gun point with your wife and kids behind you that you are going to pull a gun out and risk a shootout with them behind out? They have a better chance of hitting someone else such as an innocent bystander than the perp in an actual situation, especially in a mass shooting space. Even worse they have a better chance of having an accidental shooting with in the family at home. A few trips a year to gun range shooting a stationary target and all of a sudden you are qualified to return fire while moving and being shot at? Yeah sure... I am all for guns as a fellow owner, hunter and enthusiast, but the best reaction as any properly trained gun owner will tell you is to run in a serpentine fashion, take cover, asses and then maybe if the situation is clear approach the target. Adrenalin high, shots being fired you aren't a good judge to determine location of and identifying the suspect to immediately return fire. Many CCW's have aspirations of hearing gun fire and dropping the suspect and saving the lives of many in one quick shot, that is dangerous thinking and exactly what is in the head of those that carry and spout the same rebel phrases. When was the last time a civilian carrying ended a mass shooting? It is almost always a police officer or the shooter themselves. This is especially true as more and more shooters are wearing some type of body armor, I will wait while the barely trained CCW carrying an M&P tries to put one in the perp center mass where trained to shoot before becoming a statistic... For every situation where a civilian carrying ended a attack (which are few and far between) there are many more where it ended the other way. I personally have never met someone who knew someone who met someone else that has ever had a gun pulled on them or been in a shooting situation. Having a cousin who trains people to carry, shoots and trains often in competitions and at academies he has pointed out some significant sights and views that regular carriers either do not know, do wrong or do not think about. I keep my guns at home and use them for recreation, which is what most people actually buy them for. The whole protection thing is just BS and a cover, you like them, they are fun to shoot and you like fresh game meat, that is pretty much it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but what you forget to remember is not every single person that is carrying is, like you said, just aspiring to be that hero in a dangerous situation such as many that you have listed above.  Proper CCW requires proper training and proper education, such as, like you also said, the first rule of carrying is you always attempt the non-lethal path if possible; don't antagonize the target, just do what they ask and then run away if possible, and never first resort to using lethal force.

Am I going to pull a gun out while being robbed at gun point?  No.  That is asking to be shot and killed.  But that doesn't mean I am still going to carry and protect myself if the opportunity presents itself where my life is in imminent danger and there is a small chance that carrying would have or will save my life or the lives of others.  You can't plan for every situation but what you can do is take precautions to be prepared for situations that may never happen!

I never said aspiring to be a hero and I’d rather have the opportunity to defend myself rather than being a statistic. If you feel that you’re not capable of defending yourself with a weapon then I’d rather you not have one but I assure you that I’m more than capable of Swiss Cheesing anyone threatening myself, family or a shooter scenario all due to the love of my training. An instructor in Texas asked the class “is there anyone that would find it difficult to shoot another human being in order to protect your life or another?” Four said yes, asked to leave the class and reported them to the state.
If someone is pointing a gun at me sure, I’m not going to reach but by then, too late, be aware of your surroundings at all time, I grew up on the front lines of Chicago, I’ve seen the horrors of knife attacks by street thugs and drugged out sickos. So, again, don’t look into owning a weapon cause if you’re not going to practice and have the ability to take the life of another human being that’s threatening yours or your loved ones then do yourself a favor, don’t associate yourself with weapons cause they’ll only be used against you or your family in the worst way! Sounds like Flint, Michigan for me.  I've seen more knife-point robberies than I care to admit.

^^^ THIS.  Maintain good situational awareness at all times.  That in itself can keep you out of situations where you might become a victim.  Most would-be thugs are cowards.  If you make eye contact with them and reach in your pocket if they step towards you, most will go away then.  When it comes to training, you don't have to be a bullseye shooter.  Shooting the weapon out of the bad guy's hand is a Hollyweird fantasy.  Too much verbage is wasted on "minute of angle, etc."  Just practice enough to be repeatedly proficient at hitting "minute of bad guy" with your weapon and ammo of choice in various conditions.  Carry CCW insurance.  You never know when you might have to protect yourself or others in today's world.  When seconds count, the police are a good 20 minutes away, if they come at all.  Hard to believe there are some neighborhoods here that the police won't enter after dark unless someone has been shot, etc, and there are a whole precinct's worth of police to go in, and this ain't even Chicago or New York or St. Louis or East LA.

I have a CCW but it's almost not necessary.

Same reason why I have a 4x4, 99% of the times I don't need it, but there could be that 1% when I need it.

Same thing with being armed. 99% of the times I'm not, but there could be that 1% when I need it.

Being prepared is my thing. Never know, ya know?

Texas has the castle law that includes your vehicle, no permit needed. Unfortunately most places don’t allow guns inside. So just the bad guys will have them. If there’s ever a national permit like promised I’ll get one. So the gun stays home. In my travels some places don’t extend the castle to the vehicle. That could cause you some real problems. So the gun stays home. I limit my travel to safe places and don’t travel at night much anymore. If I ever run into a situation where I needed one and lived through it. I will conceal carry license be damned.

I prefer not to invite danger. I have no trouble with this advice:

Proverbs 22:3

The shrewd one sees the danger and conceals himself, But the inexperienced keep right on going and suffer the consequences

Yes, I know. I can't for see everything but I have many more miles behind me than before me and have become pretty good at ducking trouble.

I pray for peace and wisdom... The wisdom tells me god made man but, only Sam Colt made them equal or can make one man equal against multiple attackers... I try to avoid overly dangerous places but, the only true 'safe' place is in my house with the doors locked and the alarm set and I live in one of the 'safest' areas in American... If you think there are places beyond your home that are 100% safe you're wrong.. I was 1 block away from the mass murder in Dayton 8 hours before it happened, that was a 'safe' part of town and Dayton sure ain't the south side of Chicago... Statistics are great for news paper stories but, when you become one and your wife has to put you in the ground it doesn't matter that it only happens to whatever tiny percentage of the population... Why do I carry? So I can get home to my wife every night and so my parents hopefully never have to bury their oldest son..

It harms no one for me to carry, it's concealed so no one sees it. It is no burden on me, I have a good belt and holster and I can make a 10 mile hike armed or a 10 hour day in the truck without discomfort.... It is almost a zero chance that I'll even need it but, you can say the same about my seat belts and the fire extinguishers I keep on hand.. Some say why, I say why the heck not?

I carry because it is my right as an American. I don't live in fear of anything. That's media hype. New Hampshire is constantly named as one of the safest states in the country yet we have some of the most lenient gun laws in the country. Guns don't make someplace less safe, it's unstable people.

AR15s have been in production since the 1950s. Mass shootings are for the most part a relatively modern phenomenon. What changed? Society.
