Please help with a towing question

With the strike going on might be best to just look around and find one on a dealer lot.  2020 DRW are not scheduled to be released till later in the year.  14,500lb fifth wheel should be just fine on a 3500 SRW, if you were full time RVing, then yea id go DRW simply for safety and reliability.

So I tow a cattle trailer almost everyday loaded with cattle. I have both SRW and DRW trucks. For stability and excessive weight, I go with the dually trucks. I have both gmc and dodge duallys. The only downside to DRW is turning radius and parking if you are in town or city. I’m used to it though, so I just take the dually. I have a 2019 GMC Denali dually now and it is long, but I love pulling the trailer with it as it is so stable.

A long box srw has the same turning radius spec as a drw.

All drw are long box, but many srw's have the 6.5 ft one. Of course, the shorter wheelbase on the standard box truck.

For 2020 crew cabs, the curb to curb  is 57' for long wheelbase, 52.7 for the short wheel base.

2019 and earlier turned slightly shorter than the 2020.

That dry and empty, we never travel with water in the tanks. I guess the price point between the two is mute when it's that much money. I more concerned about safety and stability. We've never had a fifth wheel, so this is a new adventure but we've been pulling a travel trailer for almost 20 years. We've see plenty accidents, fortunately never involving us so safety is always #1. Maintenance is nill between the two choices except for tire replacement but the size of it is intimidating I guess. We currently have a 2018 2500 hd Duramax but it has a standard bed so almost the same size but not a long bed and certainly not as wide.

What hot do you use with the short bed? I just went from 08 3500 dually to 20 2500hd with short bed.

I'm sorry, you asked what hot?? A type o for sure. A short bed is not a good combo for a 5th wheel unless you have a slider hitch, if that's what you're asking.

The pin weight we are looking at for a 5th wheel is the sole reason I went with a 3500 SRW.  It would be close with a 2500 but I'd rather be safe and not be over because then we'd either end up with a 5th wheel we don't really want or over GCWR and chance some nasty tickets while towing.

I don't mean to derail the thread but just curious as to how many out there have been pulled over while towing to check weight?  Not for any thing else but for the LE officer to check proper weight if  that makes sense.

Reading on some of the RV forums, a few states have recently upped pulling over out of state RVs to verify basic weight restrictions (GCWR, etc)

For me, being well within actually ratings is more important as a safety factor than anything.
