Taking truck to dealer Monday

Noticed over the last few days at cold or hot idle the lifters/rockers are ticking. Sounds like two or three of them doing it, possibly more. Its very obvious sitting in park with the drivers window down, each revolution you can hear click click click....click click click. Its not an exhaust or fuel injection noise. The noise appears to go away when driving, I only have 4k miles left on my power train warranty so I figured might as well take it in. I'm assuming if it is lifters/rocker arms that would be covered??

I highly doubt it is rockers. Now lifters oh yes. And that is a involved and costly fix so I would get it in and get it done then dive the sit out of it to know nor hope it is done right.

I'm sure the shop is going to try and fault your warranty any way possible with a job like that. I just got my wife a Black 2019 GMC Yukon Denali. It has 1,500 (approximate) miles on it when I saw spots on my driveway where she parks it.

So we took it in to the dealership and they tried to throw the book at her saying this would only happen if she drove it inappropriately. They also tried to make a case saying she misused the 4x4 utility (since 4x4 was on due to the rain the day before). As well as a litany of other BS, It wasn't transmission is was rear main seal, It wasn't rear main seal it was a valve cover, it wasn't the valve cover it was transmission. They settled on "we don't see any leak at all". Drive it until the scheduled oil change and bring it back........ in several thousand miles OOOOK...

Long story short, if you take it in STICK TO YOUR GUNS. Read your manual and the Warranty carefully.

also, As soon as they start to go again I would grab a heads/cam package with AFM/DOD delete. Labor would cost about the same since they have to remove the heads any way. It'll give you peace of mind and a little more giddy up!

Are you part of the vacuum pump replacement recall?

They get noisy when they are failing, loud ticking noise.

Well I dropped it off this morning and of course it wasn't making the noise today. I'll probably get charged a service fee for wasting there time. It's been doing it about 2wks I just hadn't had time to get it to the dealer.

Dealer called back and said they could not replicate the noise. Said it could be a purge valve (whatever that is). I still say its the lifters, I may try some 5w oil next oil change instead of the 0w.

If it was a lifter it is possible it popped back open. Make sure you're cleaning out your VLOM screen. That along with fresh oil will keep the lifters healthy. I don't think it was your purge valve that is the tiny black tank that sits/bolts to the right of your intake manifold. It sucks out exhaust emissions from the air in your manifold.

It is the active fuel management plate that is under your intake manifold and controls the Lifters.

Watch this short video. It will help make sense of it all.

Ok, well I am running a range disabler. Should I drive the truck once a week or something and let V4 kick in/out to lube the lifters?

If it was my truck, I would;

  1. Take off the intake manifold
  2. Start to drain my oil
  3. Remove the black pad that sits over the fuel lines
  4. Take off the fuel lines
  5. Remove the VLOM
  6. Clean the VLOM and all the screens
  7. Install the VLOM
  8. Install the Fuel lines
  9. Install the foam pad
  10. Install the Intake Manifold
  11. Fill up the oil
  12. Turn off the Range and drive for a few miles. Get on the highway and pound it.

If that doesn't fix it back to the dealership while you're under the warranty.

Thanks for the help.

Odd thing is I heard the clicking noise for about 4days in a row last week. I haven't heard the noise in a couple days including today. IDK if that's a good sign or bad?

Yeah, it may have popped back up. Hard to tell without hearing it myself. If it's driving well enough now I would change the oil and carry on. The second you hear it again make sure it winds up at the shop. Especially in the next 4,000 miles. Dirty Oil and normal wear and tear.

Now that you mention the oil stuff I'm wondering if I caused this...

I bought the truck used with 53k miles on it, one owner - regular maint on car fax. Truck was bone stock.

I got to doing some research and saw that this engine was DI so I bought some seafoam intake cleaner and did that through the throttle body.

About a week later I did it again with CRC brand then changed my oil. I'm wondering if I dislodged something and its blocking that screen or if that's even possible? My current oil only has about 2000 miles on it. I used 0w-20 full syn with a wix filter. The truck drives fine, when I heard the clicking I didn't have any CEL's or missing. Just the clicking sound during each revolution. It stopped a few days ago but the 5wks I've owned the truck it has run smooth on the highway. Even after disabling v4 I'm avg about 20mpg which I thought was good for a full size 4wd.

    • I have A 2020 1500 5.3 8 speed. LTZ. Transmission problems since 60,000 miles. Started when I go to store in morning to get my morning coffee before work leave truck running get back in put it in drive/ rev no movement step on gas a little slams into gear. Put in neutral step on gas little shake then put in gear and gose.  Shut truck off start .. ok now at stop light stop truck after a few seconds feel a little kick if that doesn’t happen stuck in 3/4 gear shut truck off wait few seconds and start usually ok again. If you down shift manually ok as long as you get into 1st before stop. If not it kicks . I WANT A NEW TRANSMISSION. Now I want a new truck it just hit 80,000 IDK IF ILL BUY CHEVY CAUSE THEY STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM AND REFUSE TO RECALL . Oh I’ve changed the fluid and filter 3 times now. And yes used mobile 1 not ac/delco cause it’s not meeting the requirements that mobile is did use ac/delco filter
    • Of course refrain from political debate but I myself have very dismal hope for what is all going on up here every where we turn so I nodded my head when I saw this joke.
    • I'm looking at carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and lumbar fusion.
    • While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
    • Got this yesterday out of nowhere. Truck is a 25',6.6 gasser with 8k miles.  Only semi anomaly is that the truck had been sitting, uncranked for 6 days. Elec Stability Control showed immediately upon cranking, not while driving. No drivability issues, just the message. Battery didn't seem to be weak when cranking over.  I drove it, killed it, let it sit a few hrs with no avail.  Truck is 100% stock. No damage.
