I've been running Toyo Open Country A/T's for a long time and happy with them, but now Les Schwab is phasing them out, replacing with Mazama Open Range, at $289/each.  Wow.  I'm willing to pay that if the tires are worth it, but also considering the Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT or similar, at about $190 locally from Tire Rack.  Any experience with either one?  Or a recommendation, and yes, I know this as almost as bad as asking for an oil recommendation.

 

I don't use my truck for actual "off-roading", but a lot of logging roads for hiking access, and we go skiing in the Cascades here in Washington, so snow rating is important.

I just put on a set of Cooper AT3 4S tires in 275/65/18 on my Silverado.. Tirerack has a good video on the AT3 4S but, nothing on the LT... The LT is a different rubber compound I believe... Do you have a 1500 or 2500?

Call a local shop and ask what they recommend. They will give you copper or equivalent for the same money. Pick a shop that is close to you and convenient as they will be doing warranty work on the tire. Name brand or not you will be happy. Dont get hooked on a brand.

I’ve heard great things about the General Grabber X3. Apparently, it’s got great wear for a mud terrain. Check out you tube reviews, you may like what you see. Otherwise, Nitto Ridge Grapplers, these are 295/60/20’s (34”)

My truck is a 2006, 1500 SLT X-cab 4x4, Z71.  I keep hearing good things about the Coopers.  I had a set of Coopers on my FIAT 124 Spyder in a previous life, and liked them.  Didn't put a lot of miles on them since the FIAT mostly sat waiting for parts.

Hands down my favorite brand of tire. If I can get General I run it.

Ok good, I'd stick with the 4S over the LT, softer ride, better compound for all seasons and longer tread life..

Thanks for taking the time to reply, everyone.  I trolled around the web and that seems to be a good recommended tire, and Discount Tire just a few miles from my house has them for about half the price of the Mazamas, $160 vs $289.  No way I can pay Les Schwab almost $1,358 after tax, valves, balancing, etc., for a set of rubber.

If you have a 1500, no need to get an LT unless you are outside the tire weight rating or close to it.  I think most half tons cant exceed P rated tires anyway, but some of the trucks towing 8k+ could see a benefit from the higher ply tire when towing.

 

Ive dug through tirerack quite a bit and found you can comfortably depend on your vehicle tire rating specs and specs of the tire.    Going overboard on tire specs when not needed will not help.

Good point, if you're regularly towing heavy or hauling heavy loads, it might be worth it to go up to LT tires... I rarely haul anything besides my fat @ss around so I stick with P metric.

I put 275/65/18's on my truck for $210 each installed + tax.. I didn't catch your tire size, I'm guessing 17" rims? Try your local shops, I paid about $50 less going to my Dad's regular mechanic guy and I avoided the crappy service the discount tire dealers all offer in my area.. I needed a tire leak fixed and they couldn't see me for over a week and it took 20 minutes just to get a live person on the phone... I don't have time for service like that.. Obviously your local discount tire maybe better...

Yeah, this is a "gentleman's truck"....HAHAHA.  I have a SnugTop canopy on it, and It will likely never see even 800 pounds in the bed.  Now and then I rent a small U-haul 6 x 12 trailer for dragging stuff around.  Tires are currently the Toyo Open Country P265/70/17's and serve me well.  I'll stick with that spec.  Thanks again.

I think those are going to be my next tire. 275/65/18. I currently have Terra Grappler G2's...I have roughly 54,000 miles on them. Starting to get squirrelly in the rain..

They’re great tires for just about every terrain but not to thrilled on their wet performance when it comes to black top. I’ve got approx 15k miles on them and just a couple days ago I was shocked to find them constantly spinning on wet blacktop. I’m not thrilled with them in wet weather, excellent in offroading conditions and literally bullet proof by not showing any pitting or chipping along with zero curb rash at all unlike most every other tire I’ve had like the KO2’s which would pit, chip and show every curb rash.

    • I was around and remember that era very well, so I'm calling b/s on that statement. If they were that bad no police department or taxi company would've bought a single one ... but they were used in both services (and fire) for DECADES. They were bulletproof and proven. Even the early 21st century ones weren't too bad! The early models were legendary.   Mine is proof, but people like atlas are blinded by agenda and refuse to believe facts right before their very eyes.   Even decades after they were built, a new generation started driving them, posting all their builds and shenanigans on Grandmarq.net and Crownvic.net. The failures would show up then, since they all were deep past 100k-150k miles by that point, and younger drivers tend to be a little aggressive, especially with vehicles than can lay a one-tire fire for as long as you hold your foot in it. They've more than proven themselves over the decades.   The only thing that'll really take them out is road salt. The bodies and sheet metal were garbage. A victim of the cheapout FoMoCo and GM have been partaking in before then, and since.   Today it's the stuff that counts - the undercarriage that rots away first!    GMs Caprice was no slouch either. Reliable as a stone ax - the opposite of what they build now.    
    • Let me know how your vehicles do in 10 years. You don't know ******, kid. 😂    There's a reason that Panther platform was used as police, fire, and taxi service for DECADES ... long before you were born, apparently.
    • If your connector also has a big lever to get the connector on and off, you don't want to force the lever either way, as it becomes a bigger problem if you bust the lever or the mechanism it works.
    • It's just useful to disconnect the battery to prevent odd shorting out when unplugging/plugging stuff together.  I also  touch the two cable ends together (after disonnecting) to drain the small amount of stored battery energy in various modules.   I believe the main system where you need to be more concerned with, so you need to do the above and then wait some time, iss when you are working on the air bag system, to prevent inadvertent firing of the air bags.   The in-cab switches are just that, plain switches, it's generally not a problem to swap them in/out.  For my '12, I'll get an error message on the dash if I power up the truck w them unplugged, but that's it (power up= turn the ignition on).   The ITBC located above the spare tire is a computer that manages the trailer brake system.  That is probably more important to have the battery disconnected.  It does have to be programmed to the truck, either before or after it's installed, for it to work.  For my '12, I had a very hard time reinstalling the main connector to it (IDK if yours is the same or not), it turned out the silicon seal was jamming up, preventing it from going on all the way.  I finally got it fully installed by lubing the seal with a bit of dielectric grease, then it slid on and latched in place easily.
    • JR ! I just got the truck back from the Dealership today . The technician did a cold remote start on the truck this morning and it made the noise . It was determined that it was a starter issue and replaced it under warranty . Of course   it did not make the sound after a new starter was put in because the truck was not cold . We will we see what happens tomorrow morning when I start the truck cold  . Keep tuned !   Oh I found a video on YouTube of a cold start and it did the same thing your truck and mine do , I will see if I can find it and post it up
