 Hi all!

I have a question about speedometers. Is it possible to buy a used one with less miles online and put that in the truck with out matching the original miles?

I tired to search for topic but didn't see anything that matched.

Thanks in advance!

Negative,

Miles are stored in the ECM. You can run without a speedo and miles will still be racking up on the ticker.

Yes, you can swap instrument panels (IP) and whatever mileage that is stored in the IP is what is displayed.  The IP isn't necessarily the same (some have DIC, some have a transmission temp gauge, and they have different programming depending on what options the truck it came out of had), but they still basically work and display whatever mileage is stored in them.  The IP's may not be compatible across the whole GMT800 range (from '99 to '07), as there was a significant electrical/computer change in the middle (around '03/'04).

I don't believe the mileage is stored in any other computer.  It might store the VIN#, and if it does, that may be the only way to tell (as in, if it does store it, and you have an advanced code reader like a techii, you may be able to read the VIN stored in the IP and compare it with the VIN of the ECM and radio and what's on the dash).

Well that's unfortunate. I just bought a truck and the dealer had the IP put for servicing due to gauges not working and now the DIC buttons are not working. I've read that if there an IP that is not flashed for DIC then those buttons wont work.

And with your information now leads me to believe that this is not the original IP and was lied to about the miles.
