Tires for better mpg

Don’t take my word for it, better yet, why is it BFG KO2’s are the official Baja Racing Tires of choice, cause with their legendary design and interlocking tread, best tires on sand, guess that’s why they’re Baja Champions lol. Id rather be in sand over running through mud any day.

Because they are a paid sponsor... They have been sponsoring teams and the series for decades. The K02's aren't what is winning, it is their desert racing KR series of tires in most cases. The K02's are the most over-rated tire since they were the original all terrain tire, you pay for the name and cool look. Balancing problems, noise, mpg hits due to heavy weight and hydro-planning issues because of the interlocking tread not excavating water properly aren't exactly king of the hill specs. I would rather buy an equal performing tire for $75 less per tire and doesn't rest on its name than something every other person has. It is the tire of choice for the suburban dad, 4wd truck, leveling kit, K02 tires wrapped around a black off road wheel like methods or fuels.

 

Buy a tire for what you are going to be seeing terrain wise, if you have a better chance of running in to a muddy field than sand, well a sand tire won't do you much good when you're hunting. 

 

OP, as many have directed previously anything that is lighter (stay P-rated), closer to stock size, skinnier and has a less aggressive tire will help claw back some mpg. How much, it all depends but will help. I am like you, I didn't buy a truck for the mpg but if I can save a few why not? As long as it takes me where I want to go and does what I need to then I am all for it. No one ever got rich by not saving money...

Two different kinds of tires tires so quit comparing.

 If you ask me the BFG's are old and pretty much unchanged since the 1980's. Old school.

To the OP

If you want gas mileage tires look no further than the Goodyear SRA. Shitty tires but they are cheap and you'll get good gas mileage. That's why they put them on these trucks new.

 

Really if you guys are so worried about gas mileage, well I don't know what to tell you. It's a truck not a Prius.

Myself I could care less if I save a few bucks on a tank of gas.

The gas mileage is whatever it gets. I don't care.

I’d have to agree with you on buying a tire based on the terrain you primarily drive on. There’s no AT tire out there that can beat a road tire on mpg’s, that said, it would be a toss up on which AT tire would give the best mpg’s versus the other. I’ve been running BFG KO’s since late 1980’s and never had issues but there’s a lot more BFG AT tires produced and on the road today than others so I’m sure there will be some unhappy customers out there. I almost bought oversized Michelin Defenders after my horrible experience with Nitto Ridge Grapplers but based on my OffRoad needs I settled for KO2’s, will they last? Depends on my driving characteristics and how well I maintain them. Good luck OP, let us know what works for you.

When I got my 2019 Canyon Denali, the first thing that happened, with less than 200 miles on it, was swap out those Dueler tires with Michelin Defender LTX. I drive on road and gravel trails, and they have handled it just fine. The wet road handling is miles above the Duelers it came with, and they have great road manners for eating up the miles. I used to do the whole off road tire deal in college, then got tired of having tires that were more expensive and louder but worse handling and rougher riding than a tire that matched the terrain I drive on. Didn’t have any issues driving out in a field with 6” of snow on it with the Defenders either a few weeks ago. They have just enough off road grip to do the job for me.

Just out of curiosity: How did a dumb question about whether ditching my current AT's for street tires would help my fuel economy turn into a pissing match about which tire is better in the sand?

I heard if you add a few ounces of Amsoil to each tire you get a 1.5 to 2 mpg increase. Greek?

I'll have to give that a shot! Do I apply it directly to the treads? If so, what's the best method of applying it evenly?

 

Oh, and if Amsoil gives me 1.5-2 mpg, would I get 2-3 if I use Mobil1???

Mobil 1 is good for around 3 mpg.
Just put some on the sidewall like armor all[emoji2957]

Yes give it a shot asap! Then pour redbull in the crankcase! Youll be flying before you know it. Hell redline that sombish!

In your case, don’t think it really makes a difference and hopefully you’re not going to ask next which oil will give you better gas mileage lol!

These two will save about 10 pounds a wheel and an inch in width, a little less in height. Won't know it 's the same truck.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.  
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally. 
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
