Might explain some of the engine AFM issues that have cropped up over the years?  Unless it is severe enough to cause an immediate issue the service guy probably just says "no  damage" and moves on to the next victim (oops I meant customer of course)       

You won’t blow the engine just cranking it without oil.  All the internal parts are still coated in oil.

Exactly, your good for 30 seconds or so(Ive done it on my Grand prixs), but the low oil light will come on instantly so it really shouldn't be a problem.
