2019 Suburban - Fidelty Extended Warranty

Hello everyone,

 

New to these forums - We recently (couple days ago) purchased CPO 2019 Suburban LT (very excited about the new ride). This particular vehicle was used for rental purposes so it has about 45k miles on it, however it is in excellent condition. 

Dealer offered us what he referred to as "Powertrain wraparound warranty" (Fidelty Platinum) - since this is a Certified vehicle, we already get 6yr/100,000mile powertrain warranty and 12month/12,000mile bumper to bumper by manufacturer. However, this wraparound warranty that they sold us is apparently "bumper-to-bumper" for the duration of our powertrain warranty.

My question - is this warranty worth keeping? We paid $1540 for this (after he applied some discounts) comes with $100 deductible 

Since it's our first time owning a Suburban, I wanted to know if it may require repairs on the regular, especially for a vehicle which has seen 45k miles. If so, would this warranty be worth keeping or are we better off returning it? 

If you think about it - we paid 1540 for basically 4 years and 40,000miles since manufacturer covers upto almost 60k

I skipped the option when I bought my 2016 Suburban in 2017 with 39k miles, but I wan't offered anything for close to that price. My logic was the powertrain had another 20k or so left on it so if it crapped out quick I'd be covered.

 

With the price of parts and labor that's really only 1 visit to pay for it... since you already paid for it I would keep it, I feel like $1500 is cheap insurance and 4 years is a pretty long time to be covered.

We buy extended warrantees on all our new GM cars.  Some may say it's a waste.  However, cars are so complicated with such sophisticated electronic systems, any electronic failure will be very expensive.

What you said above is exactly what my point was - if I already have powertrain warranty till 100k (courtesy of GM Certified) should I bother with the bumper to bumper for extra 40k miles?

True - cars now have very intricate electronic systems and it can be expensive to fix them. I guess that's what my question comes down to - are these repairs fairly common in Suburbans below 100k miles or not. My friend advised me that nothing happens until 100k that's why they sell these warranties, and that you are better off buying a warranty after 100k mark.

You might try pricing a warranty exceeding 100k miles.  My guess is it will a 3rd party one that is very expensive and full of exceptions.

Fidelty is also third party - only difference is that it is offered through dealer, but reading online reviews, people say you still have to file a claim and sometimes they send an adjuster which assess the repair costs etc while your car is parked at a dealer shop, can take several weeks sometimes. Also I looked around and any 3rd party offering warranties for over 100k miles are quite expensive as the risk for repairs is increased.

Since it's bumper to bumper I would say it is worth it, there is no guarantee you'll use it but for the random expensive module or other similar failure I would enjoy the piece of mind. The powertrain warranty doesn't cover all that much really...

 

Another thing to factor in, I do all my own work so a warranty is rarely worth it... if I was going into a dealer for problems I would be inclined to get the best warranty I could afford, there's been several examples of rabbit holes that ended up being very expensive. I feel like the platform is very reliable in general, which is why I bought what I did, but relative to parts and labor costs I also feel like $1500 isn't a lot of money.

If it gives you piece of mind then keep it. I say you got a really good price on it.

I am not sure about this - it's a exclusionary protection, meaning they tell you what is NOT covered for Platinum and it doesn't list that. You can check it out for yourself int heir brochure here https://www.fidelitywarrantyservices.com/brochures/vehicle-protection

Very few of any cover shocks, those are wear items.

Warranty is very important! If those injectors go out on you power train doesn’t cover them, and it would only take one or two to go bad for you to make your money back.

I say good purchase. And if you know of a friendly neighborhood GM tech, they can take care of you with any issues you may have.

Also, just to clarify, my concern wasn't so much about paying for extended warranty (as a matter of fact I love warranties). On the contrary my main concern was that they are selling it short at only 100k miles, as most people told me nothing goes wrong for first 100k miles - How true is that for Suburbans in your view as you are a GM tech you must've seen quite a few suburbans being brought in for repairs and what usually goes wrong with them below 100k mile mark?  I am tempted to get a quote from them to extend it to 150k miles if they would...

Injectors, front shocks, if it’s a 6 speed then it’s probably going to explode, front camera, hmi module, occasional lifter, vacuum pump, condenser, haptic motor, if it’s an 8 speed it needs a flush and a valve body, roof antenna, sunroof close out panel will fall off, wireless charging harness, door latches. All those are things I’ve seen failed before 100k. Prob more but those are most common. Under normal driving with routine maintenance you’d maybe only come across one or two of these items.

Oh no. No no no. The 6 speeds in my generation truck (2010) are great.

The new ones have challenges.

8 speed is highly reliable. It will shift like a teenage girl learning stick and vibrate when you haven’t changed the fluid but I’ve never seen one go bad before. EVER.

Maybe I’ll do a small write up on what happens on the new 6 speeds if someone is interested
