Oil change

Hey guys,

Got my 16 silverado 5.3 v8 in december of 19 only one owner before me good maintenance records. I noticed today the oil change sticker had 2-6-20 or 69000 miles when I got the truck it had 64000 and some change now it has 65000 and some change. My question is should I go by the date or milage? It takes 10 mins to get to work one way and other than that I usually only drive 45 mins from home every 2 weeks or so. So I'm not constantly on the go but was wanting to see what you guys thought, in my old trucks I changed oil every 3500 or so but this is my new baby and the newest vehicle I've owned everything else was like 90 models haha. So let me know yalls opinion. Thanks

If 3500 worked for you before, go with that, since you feel comfortable with it. You don't say how many miles annually you're driving. But I've got two vehicles that don't get driven much. One I change annually, but anytime it is run I put some miles on it. No short trips. It averages about 6k-7k per year.

The other is driven much like you describe. Daily, short trips. This vehicle gets semi-annual changes, which works out to about 3k to 4k per change.

Other vehicles of mine that get 12k to 15k average a 5k interval

One way to know about interval would be to have an oil analysis performed

In the end do what you feel comfortable with. Choose whatever oil you feel comfortable with. Plenty of good quality synthetics out in many brands, available off the shelf locally. You can of course purchase Amsoil, Redline, etc.. that are 100% synthetic.

Again spend what you feel comfortable spending. Choose what ever top name brand oil you like. Use your current interval not exceeding 5k, imo. The maybe have an analysis done.

And now let the endless oil debates begin,

If it were my truck, I'd change it now so I know exactly my when it was done and what's in it.  From there, with your apparent annual mileage, I'd change it every 6 months or 5000 miles.  Otherwise, the advice above is very good.

Given your daily commute and goals 3,000 - 3,500 miles sounds about right. Given that frequency I could get real happy with something like Valvoline Full Synthetic Advanced or Castrol GTX Magnatec or something like that. It's hard to make a bad pick if you stick with a 'known' Dexos 1 Gen 2.

Everyone here knows I'm a Red Line guy ( I see heads :shakehead: ) BUT even I use oils like Peak Full Synthetic in my short hop salt car.

See now, that wasn't so hard, was it? :)

My free oil changes are all used up. Is it worth paying for an oil change on these trucks or should I do it myself?

Meaning is everything easy to get to, drain, and replace?

As long as you don't mind getting a little dirty and you have a decent place to work

If you can do it yourself this way you know it’s done right and you can use the oil you want.

That's always been the problem - not worth getting oil all over my driveway. Thankfully, my new house has a great spot on the side of the house to do it. So the 6.2L 8-speed setup is easy to get to the filter and plug, and it drains easy?

I'd say it's a pretty easy job. These trucks sit so high I would just crawl under, now the truck is lowered so I do have to put a jack down there but even then then it's a 20-25 minute job.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
