2016 Sierra 1500 SLT (buying questions)

I am looking at a 2016 GMC Sierra SLT Premium a/c / heated seats, heated steering wheel, sunroof etc. What should I be looking for when looking it over at the dealership? It has 48k miles so right at average of 12k per year give or take.

Take it to a local mech shop and have them look it over. Its worth the inspection fee. Not worth eyeing it yourself. Cheers to your new ride[emoji106]

If it is on a GM lot, I would ask for service records to see what has been done.

16 is not going to have as long of warranties as the 14 and 15's did, so you should check to see if any is left by what date the truck was first registered, miles you are still good on.

I would schedule, if possible to take it for the day, maybe even overnight, so you can start it when it is cold, run it up to operating temps, and look and listen for odd things.

Dealers like to start and get the car "warm", old trick, that way they have a chance to also listen and look for things you will not be there to hear on a cold start up.

On your drive, check for vibrations, how the brakes feel, any coolant smells at the front of the engine, make sure the sunroof does not have any stains from leaks around it, check the rear window area also for same thing, make sure the seats are working, along with the steering wheel, all thing you can do by yourself if they let you take it home, or for a long test drive.

thats an option, I am pretty mechanical savy owned a silverado and currently tahoe now replaced transmission on silverado and plenty of other things (lift kits, brakes, power steering, etc.) just wasnt sure if there was any typical nuances with these trucks that stick out to people who have owned them for awhile. I appreciate the advice though always a safer bet taking to a professional to look it over.

Perfect sounds like same things I am thinking about as well, its a few hour drive so i actually had a local friend stop by unannounced yesterday to look at it for me and checked out via him (he started/test drove it) so that helps, it does have about 11 months / 11k miles left on warranty through GM so that is good just incase.

Service records should be able to provide if the vacuum pump, AC condenser, and a few other things have been replaced yet under warranty.

16's seem to be pretty good overall, they worked out a lot of the issues that were found in the 14 and 15's.

Are you happy with the price?

There's a long laundry list. Lots of things to check.skim through this site or just goggle 14+ silverado issues/ problems. That said you might get a gem and have zero issues. Good luck[emoji106]

Does it have the 8L90 with documents showing the dual flush and installation of approved Mobil 1 ATF HP fluid?

Yep happy with price its listed below what I've found comparable for same year/mileage/features. Only downfall i've found is that it does have a 6 speed and not the 8 speed but that isnt a deal breaker for me GM seem to always have transmission issues at least in my past with silverado and tahoe 4l60E. I did already check no open recalls, I feel like im on the right track with checking things you guys are throwing at me this is what I was hoping for by creating this thread.

I would consider this a positive, not a downfall.  Sounds like a nice truck.  I've owned a '09 SLE and a'15 SLE with the 6 spd and very pleased.

only reason i say downfall is all the scares recently of torque converters going bad but if its a GM its destined to happen they just seem inept to create a quality transmission that runs forever. Yet they have a 5.3 that lives forever!

Yes, but there seems to be more complaints directed at the 8 speed. ? Funny thing is I did not have a good experience with my 5.3! ('09 Sierra)  My '00 4.8 V8 gave me nine years with zero issues,  This followed a couple of bullet proof 350's.  My current '15 4.3 V6 is proving to be another trouble free experience.    My perspective is you will always be able to find unhappy product reviews on almost everything.  Disappointed consumers are more likely to vent than those who are content with a purchase.  You are looking at a nice truck.  Get an objective,  professional inspection.  If it all checks out, buy it and enjoy!

See if they will throw in a transmission service for free/discounted price.

If the torque converter is going bad, you will be able to tell on your test drive.

Take it for a drive at highway speeds 65mph - 80mph and make sure there are no vibrations. If you detect even a slight shake at those speeds, don't buy the truck. You will want to sell it by next week if its a shaker.
