Console MOD

I don't understand GM engineers! The new trucks have absolutely no storage space for regular items we all have in our trucks. In my old Silverado I would use the ash tray for loose change, and there was a spot to hold my sun glasses. The new trucks have no ashtray, but for some odd reason they decided to put a couple brackets to hold file folders. How many people have file folders in their truck is beyond me? I decide to make a removable tray to keep all my loose crap organized and out of sight. I plasma cut the pieces from 14g aluminum and powder coated it a fine textured black. Should work good, but I will try and source some type of thin foam to line the bottom to prevent rattles.

Real nice work!  I agree that they were sleeping when they did not put a sunglass holder in the roof console like so many other GM’s.

Too much work for too little payback. $20 on amazon or Ebay gets you a segmented tray with coin holder and rubber floor pads and fanother $10 you can throw in a decent lighted cell phone charger that works better than OEM.

I ordered a console safe from one of the truck websites, it's different than the lock r down or console vault in that it has a separate locking section and one that's open. I use the little open spot for my badge, sunglass cleaner etc...other random junk in the bottom. The one I have issue with is that giant hole in the dash that you can't really use for anything...whats that about

Some guys (myself included) really enjoy fabricating things instead of buying. It brings peace of mind.

Tom, some guys will never get it. Some like to play video games or surf midget porn all day, I like to build things. I get satisfaction knowing that tray was made by a plasma table that I built and coated with equipment that I built. It's just too easy to buy some Chinese crap from Amazon.

Would you mind sharing where you purchased the safe? I have been looking for one like that and cant find it anywhere. Maybe it is not available for the GMC?

Very nice build! Yes I agree it is a lot more satisfying to build something on your own. Usually on my builds the quality is lower, the expense is higher and it doesn’t work as good as just buying it! However I love it more.

its listed as being for the Silverado...perhaps they are different. I like this one because it has a separate place for stuff you don't need to lock up.

 

I do feel compelled to point out one problem I had, it was shipped without replacement bolts or washer and the factory ones are too short to be reused, luckily I had some in the garage that worked perfectly.

On the contrary, some of us got it a long time ago. Midget porn? Never heard, just knowing that something like that exists is creepy. Playboy magazine and female mud wrestling was the big deal  in my day. If wasting time making a plastic tray with an end result inferior to one you can buy for $20 and you can stand back and admire it....fantastic, you're the greatest.....my children were similarly proud of their work we would stick with magnets on the refrigerator....it takes higher levels of craftmanship for me to be impressed with myself or others.

 

Here's my logic.....all depends upon whether the amount of work expended justifies making the end product and whether the end product is of a level that can be appreciated by yourself and others......and making a crappy plastic tray with an end result not as ergonomically functional as one you can buy for $20 ain't it. Any project undertaken must be of a level where I and more importantly others can appreciate the amount of work and skill contained in the end product. So I'm not about to waste my time on a building plastic tray just to hide it in a console when I can buy a better one for $20. I stopped building plastic model level projects over 50 years ago.  Now, if you want to talk woodworking or metal working....child's play in a shop equipped with 10" table and radial arm saws, 4" bed lathe, floor mounted drill press, floor mounted band saw, planers, routers, etc, etc. I could simply take a 3/4" piece of oak route, glue and clamp pieces below where recesses are to be bored, cut out mortises on the underside ends, run a 2-1/2" Forstner bit in the drill press to cut proper sizes blind recesses through solid wood for coins and/or route out compartments, finish with tung oil or urethane and get a custom result that is impressive, if no worth the time and effort. Same goes for a similar tray I could fabricate from a sheet of polycarbonate and glue together. All the furniture in my home other than the bedroom sets (solid wood, not that Ikea or press board crap) was made by me over the past 40 years including chairs tables, desks display cabinets, grandfather/mantle/desk clocks, including custom Christmas gifts like clocks or ships'  weather gauges for relatives. And not in crap pine or poplar either......cherry, walnut, oak or wormy chestnut  from old barnwood......every one of them of finished to the same level and at a cost at least half of what one could buy one, that is even if you could buy one of that level, non custom.

 

In defensive driving before passing a car one must consider if passing it is really necessary, similarly before attempting to construct a $20 plastic tray from scratch one must first consider,  the whole console is a Chinese level piece of crap and deserves to have a Chinese piece of crap insert, albeit one with customized segments suited for different objects and a coin dispenser that can have coins at the ready without eyes off the road instead custom making one requiring jamming fingers into small openings trying to extract coins. Too much work for too little payback.

To each their own.  If you have the time, equipment, and skill/talent to fabricate your own stuff that is awesome. 

 

I don't have the time (work full time, also own a restaurant, have a special needs son that takes dance and karate, married, I take martial arts and the list goes on) and I don't have the equipment or skill to fabricate or build stuff.

 

So I will just buy stuff as it is easier and in the long run cheaper for me.
