I would say that it was tried and discontinued.  Most 8 speeds worked just fine, just like the 10 speeds.  The 10 speed is a better platform with newest engineering - mine is fantastic - but one man's junk is another man's treasure!

Tried and True 8 speed was "discontinued " after a few short years  - 10 speeds are latest and greatest - time will tell - but mine has been great.

My 8 speed in my 2018 Sierra was total garbage. After numerous attempts by dealer to resolve all the issues even they gave up and started with the “can’t replicate it” and “that is normal” BS. I finally threw in the towel and got a 2020 with the 10 speed.  Best move I ever made, it is a dream! Smooth quick shifts no clunking, jerking, slipping torque converter. Getting rid of the 8 speed transmission is long over due by GM if you ask me.

So my 2020 150p ltz with 3.0 and tenspeed broke down 30 days ago with 13000 miles on it code said trans module put a new one in threw the same code replace wiring harness between ecm and module threw same code then said to replace ecm threw same code now rhe engineer want to string wires like rewiring a 1992 hewes bonefisher flats boat filed a lemon law today

Have a 2020 AT4 Diesel, and the transmission is already out.  Waiting on dealership to repair.  Told me that they had 2 transmissions in front of it.

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 3.0L Duramax
 

So, I have 39k miles on this bad boy. I love the truck but have had major problems. 
 

Check engine light come on the first time. Codes for transmission. Took back to the dealer, said they it was fine. Engine light went off there- 15k miles. 

 

22k miles light came back on, took it in, same thing. 
 

28 k miles light came of, went off later that day. Fast forward, came off the highway at 39k, you could hear something break. Limped home, clunking the whole way. Towed to the GMC dealer- transmission shot.
 

GMC replaced the transmission as of yesterday- 8/26/22.

 

driving home, check engine light back on. I haven’t checked the code yet but let’s just say I’m pissed.

So love my AT4 3L diesel but since April had nothing but trouble with the transmission. They flew in a GM engineer. He said it was a module. It finally came in. Changed it out. Didn't go 10 miles down the road before it started doing the same thing. Now they've changed out the transmission. Didn't even take it for a test drive after replacing it very next morning had the same problems.. now they're telling me they're supposedly an update coming out in October that will fix it. Meanwhile I have 50K plus vehicle that is practically undrivable.

I have a 6.2 with the 10 speed and developed a gear whine, it has run fine no CEL and shifts fine no problems just high pitched whine, dealer wants to put a new transmission in it waiting to hear back tomorrow on timeframe. how long have you guys had to wait to get a new transmission?

My 2020(5.3) at4 10spd started acting up around 14k miles and was replaced 2wks ago at 38k miles.   I have zero confidence in the new one.

We have a 2020 GMC 1500 sierra 5.3l 10sp

elevation pkg. 2nd owner. We bought extended warranty… highest one we could get with dealer 50k. We have had for 1 1/2 years. Reached 135k friday. Previous week shutter started. Dealer said needs new one @$6k because we aee out of warranty.

i have been researching today and finding all kinds of problems notes on 10sp, tgat gm knows about.

we don’t have back up vehicle and we don’t have $6 k to fix. I am in process of getting with the service manager… then i will keep moving up the “chain” until i get results of them backing theor product and replacing no cost. If that doesnt work… looking at lawsuit! Is tgere a class action on the 10sp?

hey i Have this truck since cero miles most miles on hwy I've been with this shudder about 5 months , now.. this kind of issue is common on GMC  trannies , at the moment I really dont know how to proceed is my only vehicle.

but sometimes it feels like is grinding something with tires , sometimes is pulling back and so on , some people says AMZOIL does a fix but who knows . the only thig that I can think of class action law suit because historie of this companie says they been seeling this vehicles knowing this issues

There are a few class action law suites already against GM for the 8 speed transmission issues. I don't think any have gotten resolved so I wouldn't hold your breath or wait for that outcome.

      Doesn't hurt to try.  It's my understanding that you have to run it at least 4 or 5 oil changes for things to get clean.  Think about it, your engine didn't get dirty in just an oil change so over time it will slowly clean. It's the safest way to do it and not have seal issues.      I remember  a product that came out a long time ago, AutoRX, it was an additive you put in the oil and then drove for 3k miles. Some saw improvements and some didn't. It was suggested to use a non synthetic with it at the time. Same observation, use a couple oil changes and give it time to work. It also stated it worked best if you could drive on trips to keep the oil hot.  I'm sure if you ask AI it could tell you all about it.

      The part # is 84520447, mine does not have the cooled seats but I'm willing to possibly change the cover and foam if needed.   I tried that site and a few others,  added to cart and then paid. About an hout later I received a refund stating it has been discontinued.

      Thought I would add to what Bruce answered, not only do the HD models use the torsion bar system, there are I believe 5 different torsion bar spring ratings that are all physically interchangeable with all the HD trucks going from a two wheel drive 2500 all the way up to the duramax or a gas engine truck with a snow plow prep package front end weight capacity that use the maximum sized torsion bar. It starts from a 4400 lb rated set in 400 lb increments up to 6000 lb. If one wants to fine tune the ride for a certain truck application they can swap out the torsion bars.

      First off pay close attention to what Newdude pasted as he is a GM tech !.    I have a couple of questions which might cross off some questions others on this forum would be wondering about as well. So when was the engine oil changed prior to this trip, was it almost brand new oil or did it already have a fair bit of use on it before you started the trip.   Did you check the oil level on flat ground and was it at the full mark just before leaving on this trip which I gather from google map is about 700 miles or so. Why I ask and this is not the first time in history that has happened, that either a dealer or some other shop changed the oil on the vehicle and the vehicle left the shop and the owner ( you ) assumed the engine oil was full but in reality the person who changed the oil simply did not put enough oil into the engine .. it happens !. Also that a shop put the wrong viscosity oil in and an engine was not happy with that thinner viscosity and oil got past the rings at a higher rate than the proper viscosity. Not to mention if there was any leaking out of a drain plug or the filter gasket etc.

      You could, although in the end it really doesn't make much difference what comes out in exact terms since it comes down to putting enough back in so that there is enough volume so that something flows back out once the trans is up to temp for the check procedure. I presume your putting a pan on that has a drain plug but its probably the same pan mold/size as at least a while back no extra volume pan was made for the gas truck version due to the exhaust cross over pipe issue. All I can say as per volume I put back in and this was based on changing out the filter as some is trapped in it that does not come out until its removed because of the way its made inside and my truck had sat over night with the trans having been hot when shut down and dripping internally before I pulled the pan. I went off of what the trans shop suggested as a minimum volume he found worked which was 9 1/2 quarts and I had enough flow out of the stand pipe that I knew I was right on the money once it slowed to a dribble and never wasted hardly any oil but it would be totally fine to throw in a full 10 quarts too. I guess personally I wouldn't ruin a perfectly good pan by drilling a hole in it, not with the cost of replacement pans up here or the dorman one anyway with the drain was 500.00 when I priced one out a while back, totally stupid.    I might not have said before but this trans oil type really expands with heat and I think its been said on this forum and the trans shop said the same so I wanted to try and hit the lower temp of the range vs at the top or go shooting above it as that would allow more oil to flow out which wouldn't be ideal.
