Brand New GMC 3.0 with bad oil leak

So, I just bought a brand new 2020 Sierra SLT with the 3.0 Duramax.  I drove it home last night from the dealership.  It had around 200 miles on it when I picked it up.  I drove it all day today and put about 100 more miles.  The odo shows 316 miles.  I parked it on my concrete garage pad and went into my garage and saw fresh oil on the garage floor where it had been parked.  I looked under the truck and saw it dripping oil onto the garage pad.  Then I saw another spot where I parked it yesterday for a short time, again more oil.  I look under it and saw oil coming from somewhere above the oil pan but could not pin point the area of the leak.  I then checked the oil and there was only a small oil mark at the very tip of the dipstick.  I have to assume it's been leaking since it was built.  There were no warning lights and it seems to be running fine.  I did notice that the engine oild monitor showed only 75% life left?  The dealership was already closed for the day.  Any suggestions?  I dont think I want a brand new truck that's been run dry of oil.  Should I ask for a new truck or should I have this repaired and take the chance of future issues?

It still has oil in and so it hasn't been run out of oil yet.

 

Stop driving and call the dealership in the morning. They should come and pick it up on a tow truck because further driving could harm it.

 

They won't just give you a new truck, things don't work like that. You don't even know what's wrong yet so why would you question that there is a huge problem already?

I just dropped a ton of money on a brand new truck....one that should be free of major oil leaks. I'm really upset. Would you want a brand new truck that has this issue?

No, nobody wants a truck to leak oil.

 

You still have to look at it from was it is in real life. The truck hasn't blown up and it's not crashed, so why would a dealership just turn around and give you a new vehicle??

 

It could be as simple as a loose oil filter but without them looking at it, we don't know. I've dealt with more oil leaks on cars than I can remember when I worked in a shop. Small leaks spread oil around like crazy. Clean up is very simple with the right products, if done right you would never know something happened.

Mine had an oil leak, it started about 4900 miles after my first oil change so was about to get a oil change anyway, they said that somehow the filter came loose. Not sure if it was a problem with the filter or the truck, but you might check that first.

I am going to let them check it over.  Its definately not the oil filter or the drain plug.  The leak is somewhere above the oil pan.  I could not see where it's coming from.  It's just leaking a lot of oil.  I will update when they tell me what's wrong.  It's just incredibly frustrating to have a new truck with 300 miles on it and having a problem like this.

You want guarantees.  There are none.  That is why there is warranty service.  ****** happens during manufacturing.  Or for all we know someone crawled under there while it was parked somewhere and loosened something in hopes it would piss you off and blame GM.  (Not likely what happened though)  Just because you encounter an issue doesn't mean you automatically get a new vehicle.  NO matter how much you paid for the vehicle.  Get it fixed, ask them to check for engine damage, get it documented I doubt there is any damage if you were still registering oil on the dipstick, even a little, its when the oil doesn't register on the dip stick that it gets low enough to set the oil light and by that time you do have damage in many cases. 
Just let them fix the issue, and stop worrying about it.  Don't make a big deal out of something until you know what happened.

If there is no low oil indicator light popping up on the dash, drive it until the engine seizes up.  Then you are guaranteed a new engine.

Let them check it out. I had two vehicles use oil from new and had a normal life. I realize a leak is different and can be fixed. Where the oil is on the stick depends on when you check it. Just being on the stick you’re probably fine.

I wouldn't be a happy camper either.

But the reality is they will fix it.

Depending on what is wrong it's your decision where to go from there.

Don't expect a new truck.

I highly doubt there is any engine damage.

It's not as bad as I thought.  I got the truck towed to the dealer and had them drain the oil with me present so I could see how much it had left in it.  It still had about 5 quarts (it takes 7).  The oil was clean.  The are now figuring out where the leak is.  I will update when they find out.

Turns out it's a seal that goes from the intercooler to the engine.  The seal isnon order...should be up and running Monday.  My dealer has been great!

      I agree, simplicity and reliability matter more as vehicles get more complicated. A V8 work truck option with fewer electronic features and a stronger warranty would definitely appeal to a lot of buyers who use their trucks for real work. Customizing it with trusted outfitters is often the best way to get exactly what you need.webcrimsNY

      I’ve heard similar complaints from newer vehicles where the factory “premium” systems don’t always live up to expectations. A good installer should be able to improve the sound without turning it into a bass-heavy setup. I’d look into upgrading the front speakers, adding a quality DSP amplifier, and possibly improving sound deadening first—those changes usually make a much bigger difference than just adding a subwoofer. Hopefully someone local can recommend a reputable installer in the Las Vegas/St. George area.

      Do you remember that Harley Davidson was more successful (solvent) when it produced about 60% of the market demand (by design) and forced wait times of up to three years? Even when your turn came around it was, "Take what we are giving you or move to the back of the line and start over". HUGE markup's were 'normalized' and dealer killed. 40% markup and no floor plan? What's not to love? Greed will kill them yet. They have surplus production and customer base is tanking. And still they think nosebleed pricing will work.

      The engine was done as part of the 6.2 recall?   You'd have to see if your VIN also has the 6.2 engine special coverage on it.  Coverage number is N252494003.  If you have this, your engine is covered under this and NOT the GM replacement part engine warranty which is 3yr/100k from the date of install.  The 3yr/100k mi warranty is in effect for non warranty purchases.     This is not any different if it was replaced under warranty without a recall or special coverage.  So if you had a 5.3 and it popped at 3 years in at 50,000mi during the 5yr/60k powertrain, the replacement engine would not get the 3yr/100k, and instead gets the remainder of the 5yr/60k as coverage.     So N252494003 gives 10 years or 150,000mi of coverage, which ever comes first, starting at the vehicle in service date.  So if your in service date is 01/01/2022, N252494003 gives you special coverage of the engine until 01/01/2032 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.  So if your start date was 01/01/2022, you'd have left 5 years and 4 months (lets round to august 1st), or 62,000mi left of coverage.   So you need to know your in service date to know how much coverage is left.

      Okiee dokie there bud, way to take things to the extreme.   I guess you missed the whole point and take things way to serious. I installed different EV6 style injectors that just so happen to be larger in my car running the same LQ4 engine and with a better spray pattern than the stock style injectors and I noticed no difference in the idle quality. Kinda was my round about way of saying that even if you put the same size but better style injectors in your truck, you will likely see the same thing.    I'm sure you're great to have conversations with in person if that's how you act through a keyboard. One little things sets you off and now I guess my dick is all up in your face.
