Low engine oil add oil

Recommended Posts

Got hit with this last week. Sure enough checked my oil and it’s right at the end of the dip stick

is this going to be common from here on out with my truck?  2015 5.3. Has about 73k.

I do not have a catch can. The truck is tuned. Has an intake exhaust etc.

if anyone cares. I did not so recently changed from 0w-20 to a 5w-30. Being as I’m in SoCal and it’s warm here so I wanted a little more protection.  Is this an issue that caused the low oil? Should I go back to the 0w-20?

thanks!

I’ve got 107K on my 15 with a diablew tune, air aid JR intake and muffler delete. No catch can either. Knock on wood, mine doesn’t use a drop of oil in 5000 miles. I oil sample every time and everything is normal each time. I run the 0-20w synthetic oil since new. I don’t run the guts out of it either and run mid grade fuel.

I’m gonna guess it’s not normal. I know people with these trucks who have over 250K on them with zero engine work done and no oil usage issues.

Before you changed oil weight did it use oil?

Did you change brands?

How many miles on the oil when the low oil light came on?

As far as being common from now on, could be.

How often do you do oil changes?

:)

Hi there   Before the oil change. I have never seen this message come up ever. This was the first.  I have used valvoline since owning the truck making sure each oil had the dexos. I change my oil when the indicator gets to 20% on the dash.   The message came on at 54% on the oil life.

well.. not good news. at least its not knocking.. my '05 5.3 started using oil at 80k, a quart every 3500 miles. Mine stayed there until i got rid of it at 100k.. And i think the deal is they start to using oil a lot earlier.. but not enough for the owner to catch it. if the engine is not getting a lot worse mpg.. then it may not be healthy... but is not sick sick sick either. keep a close eye on it.

Keep an eye on it and see how fast it it loses oil, if it continues to do so.

This way you can figure out if it's a serious issue or not. If you asked GM they'd probably say a 1 quart in 3k miles is "normal".

$5-6 every 3-5k miles isn't that bad really. You could even run 8.5 quarts if you wanted to. The sump is never full when the engine is running so the crank won't slap the oil even if you add a touch extra.

I was looking for mileage of oil changes.

This you don't want to hear but............

I don't understand how people allow the low oil light to come on. Don't have the time to check the oil? No excuse for this in my book.

Changing the oil at 20% equates to how many miles? 5 K miles max between oil changes with off the shelf oil IMO. Me, I wouldn't go over 4 K miles.

Oil has five ways out of the motor.

Past the rings

Past the valve seals

Past a gasket (leak)

Past a failed PCV valve (stuck open)

Past a normal PCV due to high NOACK of the oil.

GM according to their paperwork on ring replacement says anything over a quart in 2,000 miles is 'normal'.

First thing we need it an answer to dyier2's question. How long did it take in miles to use a quart?

Everyone should get into the habit of checking their oil level at least once a week.

It's part of my first start of the day pre-checks.

    • If there are updates/fixes you want, you could pay to have the updates applied by the dealer.
    • Hi all - my current truck is a 2022.5 1500 High Country 3.0. I bought the truck used last year. After doing some digging, I noticed that my truck's software is stuck on the original build from 2022. I have no available software updates. I talked to my dealer about this and they recommended not trying to force an update since the 36,000 mile warranty is expired. This is a big bummer since there have been many major releases since that have fixed small issues and improved speed/usability.   For reference, the current software build number is: full_gminfo37_gb-user 10 W158E-W164.4.2-QIH22B-563.3 158 release-keys Has anyone had a similar experience? Should I just forget about it and move on, or try a different dealer?
    • Sure. Buy it for me 🤣
    • Using zip ties but 2-3 they snap due to sharp edges. Just using a shoestring. Last longer. 🤣
    • I ordered the Snap On...waiting for it to come in later this week or early next week.   New front cover, new crank seal and new balancer are on. Water pump, pulley, fan, hoses, and plastics reinstalled. I can move forward knowing all my timing marks are dead on and the front engine is hopefully sealed better than it was. Take 2 with the water pump...trying high temp thread sealer on the lower bolts.   Rebuilt injector and new-new regulator is in, it looks like new. Top intake reassembled and all the bits are reconnected and snugged down.   Thinking about knock sensors again, I located both of mine and, there's your problem, Francis... The driver's side one is broke, plastic is bashed in, part of the wire is bare, and it appears to have been damaged like that for a long time. I saw the wire but didn't think anything of it. The knock sensor might not be my pulled timing issue, but it sure looks suspect. It must still be conducting, otherwise I'd expect a CEL. But perhaps with its sacred crystal inside exposed, jilted and dirty, maybe it's sending mixed signals. So I'm waiting for one of those and a new pigtail to come in. Pass side sensor looks good, except for the spark plug wire resting on it (!). The plug wires are healthy so it shouldn't be causing an issue, but I separated them and added zip ties to nearby looms to keep everything well apart.   So, I'm down to installing a knock sensor AND, oh, replacing the exhaust and cat. I actually think that's going to be fairly easy, it's all bolt-together, all new stuff from Walker is laid out on the shop floor ready to go. Hopefully have this thing on the road again for the weekend.   My luck? It will still be leaking oil, coolant, pulled timing, intermittent CEL for running rich, or it probably won't run at all -- because that's how this project has gone.   I've never worked on a vehicle so ...hurt? ...cursed? in my life. Everything has been effed with SO HARD, but I think...knock on wood...I've managed to undo all the backyard stuff and we're almost reset back to "just" an 80k mile, 30 year old Blazer.
