I recently purchased a 2020 SLT 1500 with the 6.2. I need advice on a muffler that will give me a deep throaty tone and provide a 30-50% increase in sound but I do not want the "helicopter" sound when DFM kicks in and also I am ok with low drone in the cab. Would a Flowmaster Super 40 Delta Flow fit this bill? I am only looking at a simple muffler replacement. Not looking at replacing the entire exhaust with a catback or other upgrades. Resonators would stay in place.

I did the muffler delete on my 6.2 and I'm thrilled with it. No highway drone until over 80mph and a solid aggressive sound. There is a slight helicopter noise with DFM but I've only noticed it once or twice. Only cost me $75.

I took off the stock muffler and rear flapper and went with magnaflow 11229. Very nice. Some say they were able to remove both flappers and its good, i call bs on that. The dfm makes a choppy sound and drones before more cylinders kick in and the tone changing while its switching make the drivetrain feel busy. With the front flapper in it is more stock like with some kick when you want it to be.

Thanks, going in Friday to do a muffler delete and leaving in both flappers and resonators. I have heard of others using muffler tape on the resonator screens. How does that change the sound? Does it make it deeper, louder?

Read it makes it louder and a little raspy. Couple posts here say to leave the last one by the hanger open. Muffler delete would be higher pitched than what I have. I like a deep tone.

maybe a little pricy but ever thought of the GM Performance exhaust?  I just got mine on my 2017 6.2 and sounds really good, nice deep tone but not overly loud. It's Borla touring but made for GM and sold as GM accessory. Sounds a lot like what you are describing as wanting.  No helicopter since it has the flapper built in (at least on my 2017, not sure about the T1's)

I would remove both flappers, Borla Type S or Magnaflow 12909 are both nice options, and both sound good and tolerable on highway IMO

This is exactly what I did - left both flappers in and the resonator mesh uncovered. The sound is perfect to me. No drone on the highway but really nice on startup and under throttle. It finally sounds like it has all this power.

My only fear is the sound level. I don’t want it really loud, just loud enough to notice a good exhaust. I’m afraid it’s going to be too loud and I’ll end up putting my muffler back on. I don’t know anyone in person to find out how loud it really is. Videos help but...

I've got some start up videos I can send you but you're right, you can't tell much until you hear it yourself. I'll say this - I honestly don't think it's too loud or daily driving. I seriously can't even tell I did it on the highway. But I also have a cammed Corvette which is much louder so anything else is quiet to me haha. The good thing about a muffler delete is the cost is very minimal so if you don't like it, you can buy a Borla or Magnaflow muffler to put back in. You'll still make a better sound and save $1000 on a catback system. It's the best $75 I ever spent on a vehicle.

I'm in the same dilemma.  I don't mind it "Corsa Sport" loud when I'm on it or even on startup and idle but when I'm just cruising on the highway with the kids, I don't want to really hear it at all.  I've posted on the Facebook groups to try and find someone with a muffler delete local to me (Lawton OK).  I also plan to visit the dealer to look and hear the Borla Touring cat-back.  If the delete is too loud, i'll spend $1200 on the full cat-back but saving $1000 bucks is definitely tempting and worth the investigation!!

If you like corsa sport, leave front flapper and do muffler delete. little quieter front flapper and magnaflow, quieter yet keep both flappers and delete muffler.

If you are at all "concerned" that it "might" be too loud then a muffler delete is not for you.  It is loud.  Not open headers loud, but its louder than most of the aftermarket systems out there.  I have had a lot of loud modified vehicles in my days.  On this truck, at my age, I find the Borla Touring to be perfect.  I would not want anything louder.  You know what they say about opinions though.....

These new gen trucks don’t get too loud. My buddy has a 2020 6.2 straight piped and it’s not that loud. The flow master 40 and 44s are too quiet on these truck. If your going with a flow master then get the 10 series.

    • I know when I was looking around last year to see if someone handled Amsoil gear oil to buy at the retail level which of course means full price. I found an independent shop that works a lot on GM/Duramax pickups and they did not bring in the 75W-85 as they just stuck to the 75W-90 for the front and rear as a standard practice for the HD trucks which makes sense anyway for the higher hp/torque diesel and pulling heavy loads in four wheel drive. I haven't changed my diff oils yet but still plan on using the 75W-85 for the front diff as I highly doubt I will be beating on the truck and figured for my use type the bit thinner oil would be to my benefit for the winter for that slightly less drag. Very different weather here all winter vs northern Washington near the coast, that's for sure.
    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
